BES COMMUNITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BES BES 1STgrade wing was built in 1959 and completely renovated in 2020. The cost of this renovation was approximately $930,000. In 1983, the Kdg./2ndgrade wing addition occurred. In 1988, the 3rd/4thgrade wing and gym addition occurred.
THE FUTURE OF BES We believe there will be a need for additional space for BES students and staff in the upcoming years with the growth potential for the county. A lot of this growth will depend on housing in Burlington and Coffey County. Should we consider moving 5thgrade back to BES? The decision to have a PK-4 BES, a grades 5-8 BMS, and a grades 9-12 BHS was due to space many years ago.
TWO OPTIONS FOR BES One option would be to add on/renovate the current BES. The City of Burlington has given us the land to the north of BES in a Quit Claim Deed. We can do with this land as we see fit for the future of BES. A second option would be to build a new BES close to BHS and BMS and create a district campus area within mile of all buildings. We have 17 acres north of Wildcat/Ladycat Baseball and Softball fields we could build on. We have even thought about trying to buy the land to the east of BMS where public transportation and the city water department are located. This would create an additional expense of purchasing land.
PROS FOR ADDING ON/RENOVATING BES Cost of adding on/renovating BES would be less (approx. $15 million). Nice playground that is 8 years old. BES exists in a neighborhood setting around many homes. Rapid response time in case of an emergency. Larger cafeteria and fewer lunch periods.
CONS FOR ADDING ON/RENOVATING BES We are landlocked and don t have a lot of additional space for growth. Proximity to the new justice center. Not able to use Wildcat Athletic Complex for school activities. Renovation will be lengthy and challenging.
PROS FOR BUILDING A NEW BES All buildings will be in one area. BES could use Wildcat Athletic Complex for PE classes and special activities. Grounds and maintenance would be able to take care of all facilities in a mile campus. A new school would take care of our needs for many years to come.
CONS FOR BUILDING A NEW BES Cost of a new building will be more expensive (approx. $30-$45 million) What do we do with the current BES?
OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER What we do moving forward has bigger implications for the district. Moving 5thgraders back to BES frees up room for growth at BMS. If we decide to build a new BES, we could move the BELC to the new north campus. Right now, we have about 55 kids from birth to age 5 attending the BELC. We have a waiting list of over 45. BHS was built to have up to 400 students. Right now, we have about 265 students.
