Suicide Prevention South Middle School
Jamie's Law Suicide Prevention Education Jamie 's Law was named after a young man who killed himself. Since his passing, his sister is bringing awareness to the high risk of suicide among young adults. In 2013, Suicide was the second leading cause of death among West Virginia residents ages 10-34. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth in the United States. You can help prevent these deaths by knowing the risk factors, warning signs, and what to do if you or a friend may need help.
Being able to recognize the Risk Factors and Warning Signs is the first step in saving a life.
What Can You Do To Help? Acknowledge Care Tell It is always better to overreact than to under react.
Take every comment seriously. Ask them directly if they are thinking of suicide. Acknowledge their feelings and that they are real. Acknowledge
Let your friend know that they are important to you. Listen and offer support. Express you concern and encourage him or her to talk to a caring adult. Care
In addition to encouraging your friend to get help, you also need to get help from an adult immediately. Never promise to keep this secret. Tell
