  1. Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Student Mentoring Program

  2. The Making of a Rotary Club The need for support, guidance and advice to those in our community is essential to growth. The Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Club recognizes this, and offers its community the benefit of its member s experience and expertise through two distinct programs: student mentoring and business focus groups.

  3. The Making of a Rotary Club These programs are the foundation upon which the club was established.

  4. Founding Members Joshua Torrance & Terry Carlisle played an integral role in forming the Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Club. They felt extremely fortunate to have mentors during the formative years of their careers, and recognized that their mentors played key roles in their success.

  5. Founding Members Their goal was to have a similar impact by offering the Ellsworth High School students the same opportunity.

  6. Ellsworth Noontime Rotarians have embraced the concept of investing intellectual capital in their communities.

  7. Student Mentoring Program The program began during the 2009-2010 school year in collaboration with the Ellsworth High School. The program now consists of six junior and six senior Ellsworth High School students. It follows the school year and is a two year commitment from the students.

  8. Student Meetings The students attend the Rotarian scheduled meetings at Ellsworth City Hall once a month. The meetings are focused on professional and life skills that the Rotarians can educate the students on.

  9. We work on team building activities

  10. Mock Business After-Hours This activity helps the students gain valuable social and networking skills.

  11. Interviews Mock interviews prepare the students for future employment opportunities.

  12. College Tour A trip to Maine Maritime Academy included a tour of the campus and training ship, a meeting with the admissions office, and a sunset sail.

  13. It provided the students an inside look of what their college experience might be like.

  14. Community Service Projects like these teach the students the value of giving back to their communities

  15. Additional Programming Admissions directors for various colleges attend meetings to speak with the students about the college application process Human Resource Directors from local employers talk with students about applying for jobs

  16. Additional Programming Hold resume writing forums to help students prepare for writing their own resumes Work with local law enforcement to address topics such as gun safety and drug abuse issues

  17. The last meeting of the year is run by the students, putting all of the knowledge and skills they ve gained to work.

  18. Scholarships In addition to the valuable professional and life skills the students gain, they are also eligible for a scholarship offered by the club. The Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Club provides a minimum of two $500 scholarships to high school seniors continuing their education who have shown strong academic and community involvement.

  19. Scholarships District Grants have also been used to offer additional scholarships. This is a great collaboration that helps enhance the program.

  20. The True Reward When the teenager cashing you out at Hannaford thanks you for the mock job interview session and grins as she tells you she got the job as a result of it, you know you are making a real difference. ~ Terry Carlisle, Ellsworth Noontime Rotary Honorary Member

  21. The True Reward The Noontime Rotary Mentoring Program is a wonderful example of school and community working together in helping to support and instill confidence in our young people. The students in the program have developed strong self-advocacy skills, being able to advocate for themselves in both individual and group interactions. It has been heartwarming to watch the growth in our high school students. ~ Beverly Homich, Ellsworth High School Guidance Counselor
