  1. Contrast and Concession How to connect two contrasting ideas with various linking words/expressions.

  2. Contrast (neutral) These terms are used to contrast two things or ideas. They do not express any surprise at the differences. Examples: My name is Kelsey, while your name is Mar a. The sky is blue. On the other hand, the grass is green.

  3. Conjunctions: while/whereas Use: connect two clauses (subj + verb + while/whereas + subj + verb) Patents are assets. Debts are liabilities. Examples: - While/Whereas patents are assets, debts are liabilities. - Patents are assets, while/whereas debts are liabilities. (order does not matter)

  4. Adverbials: on the other hand/in contrast Use: connect a sentence to the previous sentence (after a . and before a ,) Patents are assets. Debts are liabilities. Examples: - Patents are assets. On the other hand, debts are liabilities. - Debts are liabilities. In contrast, patents are assets. (order does not matter)

  5. Prepositions: in contrast with, in contrast to, unlike Use: before a noun or gerund Patents are assets. Debts are liabilities. Examples: - In contrast with/to patents, which are assets, debts are liabilities. - Unlike patents, which are assets, debts are liabilities. (order does not matter)

  6. Concession (unexpected result) These terms are used to contrast two things or ideas in which one situation has led to an unexpected result. The result comes as a surprise. Examples: Although sales have increased, the company has fired over 100 employees. (Really?! Shocking!) Despite not studying, the student passed his exam. (What?! What a surprise!)

  7. Conjunctions: but, although, even though, yet Use: connect two clauses (subj + verb + but, although, even though, yet + subj + verb) James is a great employee. He was fired (result). Examples: - Although/even though James is a great employee, he was fired. // James was fired even though/although he was a great employee. (order does not matter) - James is a great employee, but/yet he was fired. (note: but and yet only go in the middle)

  8. Adverbials: however, nevertheless, even so Use: connect a sentence to the previous sentence (after a . and before a ,) James is a great employee. He was fired (result). Examples: - James is a great employee. Even so/However/Nevertheless, he was fired.

  9. Prepositions: in spite of, despite Use: before a noun or gerund: used to introduce the cause James is a great employee. He was fired (result). Examples: - In spite of/despite being a great employee, James was fired. Note: to use before a subj + verb, add the fact that In spite of/despite the fact that James is a great employee, he was fired.

  10. Practice (combining sentences) 1. Coronavirus has caused many people to stay at home. Netflix has increased its sales. Combine with: yet, nevertheless, despite 1. Nike makes sporting goods. Tesla makes cars. Combine with: unlike, whereas, in contrast

Nevertheless, Netflix has increased its sales. Despite Coronavirus causing many people to stay at home, Netflix has increased its sales. Unlike Nike, which makes sporting goods, Tesla makes cars.
