  1. Teacher slide Objective: To understand the important aspects of a CV; some which are subtle but have a big impact on the employer. Resources: CV example worksheets X 1 per pair/group The recommended time for this activity is 25 minutes (including plenary).

  2. CVs: Maximising your Potential

  3. Instructions You will receive two versions of the same CV. The CV is being used for an application to a construction apprenticeship. 1. In pairs, decide which CV is best and discuss why and how you formulated this opinion. 2. Find the aspects which make the exemplary CV better: some are obvious and some are much more subtle. Annotate the CVs to show your thinking. 3. Finally, discuss ways to improve the exemplary CV. Annotate the CV to show your ideas. You will feedback some ideas to the group.

Discussion Listed below are examples of the mistakes found in the CV. - - - - - Use of unprofessional email Spelling mistakes Inconsistent presentation style e.g. moving from bullet points to paragraphs Vague and inaccurate subheadings e.g. Hobbies etc. Listing skills but not giving context to the experience/organisation and not including key learning points Use of informal language e.g. chatting rather than networking Focus on negative rather than personal development e.g. I find this very challenging rather than I have done to develop this skill Personal profile is not specific to the apprenticeship applied for Personal profile does not include career goals Personal profile lists skills without context or examples - - - - -
