BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment LEARNING OUTCOME 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.1 and 2.2 Safe manual handling There will always be a need to lift and carry materials and objects around a workplace Not lifting and carrying correctly can cause injury, e.g.: spinal injury muscle strain cuts and abrasions broken bones It can also result in damage to: materials and equipment the work area customer s property

BTEC Level 1 Award Health and Safety in a Construction Environment LEARNING OUTCOME 2: MANUAL HANDLING 2.3 Regulations Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR), 2004 Avoid hazardous manual handling operations where possible Carry out a risk assessment Employees must take care of: take care of their own health and safety take care of the health and safety of others who may be affected by their actions tell their employer if they are going to carry out hazardous lifting Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), 1998 Covers equipment used for lifting or lowering loads Equipment should be: suitable for its intended use positioned to avoid accidents marked with necessary information used by competent people checked before use

Objects can be heavier than they look. Ask someone to help you, the lift might need one or more people, or lifting equipment. Step 2 Clear your path to where the object is to be moved, and make sure there is enough space to put it down. Adopt a secure stance, with legs shoulder width apart on either side of the object.
