Evolution of Trade through Khunjrab Pass 1963 the historic year: First Pak-China Trade Agreement KKH was fully opened for civilian traffic in 1978 Both govs used to regulate nature of exchanges of goods The volume of trade never increased in the following years. Major Exports and imports World Bank report(2011) :Diversification of exports by China 40% of these goods are destined for Consumption and retail sale in GB. Pakistani exports to China have little impact on the Economy of GB 4
Current Status of Trade Border remains closed from November 30 till March 31 Covid 19 led to further closet Only Five stranded containers were allowed to pass through Khunjrab Pass local traders are demanding opening of border Reluctance on Chinese side owing to continuing Covid 19 Threat. 5
Hurdles and Issues During Regular Teade No trade Agreement btw GB gov and gov of China standardization issue Strict Quarantine laws on side of China Damages during inspection Low quality of printing and packaging Transportation issues Same Customs Duty imports through dry port and imports through se 6
Recommendations Revise of Pak-China Border Agreement Negotiation with Chinese Authorities for Permitting Exports via khnjrb Pass as per FTA Chinese Gov must allow Pakistani Teucks to enter China on reciprocal basis Opening a consulate/visa office in Gilgit Existing Tax Regime needs to be revised 7
Recommendations Usage of Khunjrab Pass as a Transit China can Provide us transit in reaching to markets of Central Asian States. The Khunjrab Pass Trabsit Trade Agreement can be signed under the umbrella of CPEC Customs, FIA, NLC Offices may be established at different transit points Women Entrepreneurs from GB may also be included in this kind of transit trade. Developing an infustry and trade boosting programme to gain from the Khunjrab Pass. Pak and China can align Khunjrab Pass Transit Agreement to use as Highway Diplomacy 8
Conclusion 1. Comprative Advantage as well as absolutr Advantage of GB in production of fresh and dry fruits 2. Availability of herbs, mineral 3. Large scope of Value addition 4. Role of Gov of Pakistab in facilitating the local border traders is minimal 5. Facilitatiing trade by providing International Market Access 6. Financial Incentives 7.
