What is Fair or Alternative Trade? 3
Fair Trade Fair Trade is a different way of doing business. It's about making principles of fairness and decency mean something in the marketplace. It seeks to change the terms of trade for the products we buy - to ensure that the farmers and artisans behind the products get a better deal. Better prices for producers and long-term and more meaningful trading relationships are some of the benefits. It s also about information. Fair Trade is a way for all of us to identify products that meet our values so we can make choices that have a positive impact on the world. http://fairtrade.ca/en/about-fairtrade/what-fair-trade 4
Alternative Trade The defining characteristic of alternative trading organizations is that of equal partnership and respect for partnership between the producers and importers, shops, labelling organizations and consumers. Alternative trade "humanizes" the trade process making the producer-consumer chain as short as possible so that consumers become aware of the culture, identity and conditions in which producers live. All actors are committed to the principle of alternative trade, the need for advocacy in their working relations and the importance of awareness-raising and advocacy work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_trading_organization 5

Fair Trade in Your Church and School Brainstorm some ideas for community Fair Trade events you could hold in your church, school or other places in your community. Think about how you can educate others about the importance of Fair Trade! 14
Here are some ideas to consider: If members of your church gather for drinks and food after Sunday worship or are holding an event, encourage the organizers to serve Fair Trade tea and coffee. You may also want to encourage them to buy local food products. Be prepared to answer questions or give a short presentation about worker s rights and why buying Fair Trade is important. With some organization and commitment, this can become a tradition in your parish! If your school or church is holding a fundraiser, suggest selling Fair Trade chocolate. If possible, include a card with information about workers rights and why buying Fair Trade is important. These can be handed out with the chocolates and are an easy way to educate those supporting your fundraiser. 15
Organize a Fair Trade event yourself! You want your event to be engaging, accessible and fun for members of your community. A possibility for an event is a Fair Trade Caf . Set up a coffee/tea/hot cocoa/chocolate station at a local community centre or other community space. Charge enough to cover the cost of your drinks but remember that you want your event to be accessible! Prepare a pamphlet or information card to give away with your drinks. This is a great way to inform your community about Fair Trade. Consider organizing a reverse trick-or-treating event prior to Halloween. Students visit houses giving out Fair Trade chocolate and information educating people about Fair Trade and how to purchase Fair Trade products. Visit the Global Exchange website to get some ideas and resources for this event. Reverse Trick or Treating! [ click for link! ] 16
