Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Understanding Alternate Pathways The traditional pathway: teacher certification through an undergraduate teacher preparation program TAMIU s two alternate pathways: Alternative Certification Program (ACP) Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Alternative Certification Program (ACP): Meet Office of Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR) and College of Education entrance requirements INACT on-line course Five graduate courses (course list follows) A minimum of 30-hours of classroom observations Pass TExES content exam or TExES Pre-Admission Content Test (PACT)- see handout (there is a 5 attempts limit on all exams) Attain year-long paid internship in a partner school district Complete remaining certification exam(s) COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Meet Office of Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR) and College of Education admission requirements 5 ACP courses & 5 additional graduate courses 30-hours of classroom observations INACT on-line course Pass TExES content exam or PACT Complete Clinical Semester in a partner school district Complete remaining certification exam(s) COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Available Certification Areas at TAMIU Available Certification Areas at TAMIU EC-6 or 4-8 Core Subjects Bilingual or ESL Supplemental EC-12 Special Education (must pass both Special Ed. and Core Subjects/content exam) Single Subject 4-8 or 7-12 English Language Arts and Reading Mathematics Life Science History Business and Finance Education 6-12 (must pass TExES PACT prior to admission) Single Subject EC-12 Art Music Spanish Physical Education Technology Applications (must pass TExES PACT prior to admission) Composite Teaching Field 4-8 or 7-12 Science Social Studies COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

MAT MAT- -ACP ACP Application Application Process, Part 1 Process, Part 1 Submit on-line OGSR application designating MAT degree with either EC-6 (Elementary) or Other (4-8, 7-12, or EC-12) specialization Pay $35 fee (fee waived Nov. 17) Official undergraduate transcripts must be mailed from other universities (non TAMIU graduates) Submit 300-word essay to OGSR on personal goals and aspirations Meet additional requirements if your degree is from a university where English was not the language of instruction Applying for the MAT provides eligibility for Financial Aid, including scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

MAT MAT- -ACP Submit paper COED application form for transcript analysis ($15.00 fee) Submit undergraduate transcripts (not needed for TAMIU Graduates) Meet minimum GPA requirements (2.75 on last 60 hours) and on content area coursework All core courses or content are must have a score of C or better Completion of Online Screening Instrument TOEFL Scores (if applicable) Following above, achieve Full Admission status Attend MAT-ACP Orientation Session (Jan. 12) and pay $300 entrance fee Accept COED Admission Offer ACP Application Application Process, Part 2 Process, Part 2 COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Admissions Admissions & Good Standing Policies & Good Standing Policies Full Admission status must be attained and acknowledged in writing before enrollment in program courses Key Good Standing requirements (see handout): Maintain 3.0 GPA (no more than one grade below B) Continuous enrollment (one course per semester) Successfully complete 6 credits annually. Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Alternate Pathways to Educator Certification Pending TEA Policy Changes- Effective 2017 Requiring TExES exams prior to Internship Intern Certificate (only 1 yr.)- must pass content exams Probationary Certificate (1 yr. extension available)- must pass content exams and PPR 14 weeks of full day or 28 weeks of half-day clinical teaching assignments (must pass content exams) 150 hrs. of coursework completed before internship 50 hrs. of coursework completed before internship for late hires COLLEGE OF EDUCATION COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
