  2. Welcome to B-3! Hello and welcome to our classroom! We are really excited to be working with you and your child as we continue to learn and grow. There are a lot of new, cool subjects we will be learning about all throughout the year. Please keep this handbook to answer any general questions, but you can always contact us however is easiest for you. Here is a little background info about us Mrs. Burke: My first name is Janelle and I have a husband named Scott along with 2 kids, Hayden (8 years) and Kaylee (4 years). I have been involved with education for over 11 years and this will be my sixth year teaching. I used to run an after school program before I became a teacher. I have my BA in Secondary Education with English as the focus. I also have a Minor in Spanish, although I need to practice more! Random things about me: *I am allergic to WAY too many things (let s just say the list was 4 pages long). *Blue is my favorite color. *I like to wear comfortable clothing 98% of the time (no stilettos for this gal!) *I graduated the Class of 2000 at Reno High. *I am the first one in my family to finish college. Mrs. Diarte: My name is Teresa and this is my 12th year teaching and my fifth year teaching 2nd grade. I graduated from Wooster HS in 2002 and received my BA in Education from UNR in 2006. I have a seven-year old daughter named Elise and three-year old twins named Lily and MJ. Random things about me: *Yellow is my favorite color. *I love the North Valleys and my family lives out here too. *I am the first person in my family to finish college. *I have lived in Reno for 28 of my 32 years, I love it here! *Lake Tahoe is my favorite place on the planet.

  4. Attendance/Tardies Being at school every day is extremely important, but we all know how difficult that can be whether it s an appointment or unforeseen projectile vomiting, so if your child needs to miss any school, please contact the office as soon as possible. Students are allowed to miss 10 days for each semester before becoming truant. Tardies are also a distraction and a loss of instructional time. If you re running late after 9:10, please tell the office. Other tardies between 9:00-9:10 will be marked in Infinite Campus. Behavior Management There will be a few different ways we help manage students behaviors in order to help maximize learning. We use a system called Class Dojo. It s an online system where you can download the free app on your phone and it alerts you whenever your child has earned or lost points based on appropriate/inappropriate behavior. Please see the attached flyer for directions. In addition, there are also SWIM dollars and POD dollars that are part of the school s management and students can earn these for rewards at the SWIM store.

  5. Snacks/Birthdays Since 2ndgrade eats lunch first at 11:25, it doesn t leave much room for a mid-morning snack. Instead, there will be an optional snack time during their recess at 1:45. Please provide a healthy snack for your child as we cannot purchase snack for everyone. Celebrating a birthday is important in 2nd grade, so if you would like to bring in a healthy treat, you re more than welcome. These treats must be whole fruits, vegetables, or meet the nutritional guidelines that are on the district website. However, if you want to bring in traditional treats, they must be brought in on the school approved treat days. Homework/Reading Log Homework will be given Monday through Friday and consist of a nightly spelling page, math page, and reading for 20 minutes. There is no homework over the weekends. However, there will be a few home projects given throughout the year in which case, there will only be reading required. Flexible Seating We like to use flexible seating in our classroom. That means we use yoga balls, abdominal disks, standing tables, bean bag chairs, pillows, etc. rather than the traditional chairs and desks. This allows students to get their energy out without being distracting to others and themselves.

  6. Class Curriculum In 2nd grade, we use a lot of different materials for teaching all of our subjects. We use Core Knowledge fused with GLAD strategies to help teach reading and writing about Science and Social Studies. We have a new math program called Envision and it utilizes technology with math. Along with our supplemental materials we created, the students will be immersed in learning. There will be a number of different home projects that are required as well to encourage family participation and to get more hands-on experience. We also use Daily 5 (Word Work, Read to Self, Read to Buddy, Listen to Reading, Writing) during our Language Arts block in order to help foster student independence and reading skills while working in small reading groups. Volunteers/Field Trips We love having people come in and share in their child s education, so if you would like to volunteer, let us know and we will send home the form. Just be sure to have a copy of a state-issued I.D. (front and back) when you turn it in. The waiting period is usually around two weeks long, sometimes longer during peak times (beginning of school year). We will be taking a couple of field trips this year (TBD), so if you would like to chaperone, then the Volunteer form will need to be done and accepted BEFORE the trip.

  7. Leader In Me Our school has started a new leadership program called Leader in Me. It is based on the book called, The Leader in Me. There are 7 Habits the students will become familiar with throughout the year.
