  2. Training Contents Purpose of Testing Statewide Assessments Testing Ethics Violations Standard Test Administration and Testing Ethics Policy Unethical Testing Practices Formative Assessment Tools Before Testing: Teaching Practices After Testing During Testing Resources

  3. Purpose of Testing When administered properly, statewide assessments allow students to demonstrate what they know and can do. Administered properly what does that mean? Why would proper administration of statewide assessments matter? What about other assessments that are not statewide ?

  4. Statewide Assessments Statewide assessments require that educators adhere to all ethical practices and procedures as outlined in this policy. With the variety of assessments, how do I know what statewide assessments are covered with this policy?

  5. Statewide Assessments Statewide assessments are Federally mandated, State mandated, and/or Require the use of a state assessment system or software that is provided or paid for by the state. That s great! But, give me specifics. What are they? - Take a look at the Assessment and Accountability webpages. (http://www.schools.utah.gov/assessment)

  6. Formative Assessment Tools (new section) What are formative assessment tools that you use that are provided by the state? How might the testing ethics differ between the Statewide Assessments and Formative Assessment Tools?

  8. DURING testing What SHALL Utah LEAs ensure happens during the testing? What SHALL licensed Utah educators ensure happens during testing? IMPORTANT: Read the Test Administration Manual for the assessment prior to administering the assessment. Read and follow the script during each assessmentsession.

  9. AFTER testing LEAs SHALL ensure that test results are: 1. 2. 3. How are the test results provided to students and parents? How are the test results made available to educators?

  10. AFTER testing Licensed educators SHALL ensure that: 1. 2. What kind of scratch paper can my students use?

  11. AFTER testing Utah LEAs and Educators MAY: 1. Use a student s score from a statewide assessment to improve the student s academic grade for or demonstrate the student s competency within a relevant course. Utah LEAs and Educators may NOT: 1. 2. What s the difference between improving a student s grade and a nonacademic reward?

  12. Unethical Testing Practices We want to know what the STUDENT knows and can do. If your actions will cause student to NOT receive a valid and reliable score, that accurately reflects what they know and can do, don t do it! What does valid mean? How about reliable?

  13. Unethical Testing Practices Review the Unethical Testing Practices section (pages 3 and 4) Why would these practices be considered unethical? What are other practices, that aren t listed, but might be considered unethical?
