Aims & Objectives O By the end of this session all learners should: O Have an understanding of skimming and scanning. O Know the four different types of text. O Recognise the different features of types of text. O Be able to write appropriately for that type of text.
Skimming and Scanning O Write a definition of skimming in your workbook O Skimming is gaining the main gist of a piece of text using pictures/headlines/subheadings and anything else that appeals to you as the reader. O Write a definition of scanning in your workbook O Scanning is looking for specific information in a piece of text rather than reading the text in full. O Detailed reading is reading the text in full taking everything in.

Types of Text O What are the four main types of text? O Informative O Instructive O Descriptive O Persuasive O Give examples for each in your workbook
Task Using the text examples fill in each section of the grid.
Lets start with descriptive. O Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. O The five senses... O Smell/taste/touch/sound/sight O The five W s O Where/when/who/what/why and don t forget how.
The language of descriptive text O Using descriptive language and identifying process. O Using adjective and classifiers. O Using simple present tense. Adjective and synonyms Give me a synonym for the following adjectives: Beautiful Distressed Picturesque Quiet Magnificent
Task.. Taking a card from the list write a piece of descriptive text. Entry Level/Level 1 = one paragraph Level 2 = two paragraphs Level 3 = three paragraphs
Time to move on to persuasive . O Persuasive texts are all about getting you to do something e.g. advert/charity etc. O There are certain features to look out for in persuasive text: O Emotive language O Rhetoric O Quotes/examples O Anecdotes O Direct O Repetition O Text features O Give me an example of each of these in your workbook
O Write a persuasive advert for eBay. O You can sell anything you want to. O Remember to be persuasive and descriptive in your writing. O Entry Level/Level 1 = one paragraph O Level 2 = two paragraphs O Level 3 = three paragraphs
