Understanding Exponents: Zero, Negative, Multiplication, and Division
Explore the concepts of zero and negative exponents, learn how to handle them, and understand the rules for multiplying and dividing numbers with exponents. Remember, anything to the zero power is equal to one, and negative exponents can be transformed into positive by converting the base number into a fraction. When multiplying numbers with exponents, simply add the exponents if the base numbers are the same. Similarly, when dividing, subtract the exponents if the base numbers match.

Zero and Negative Exponents Mr. Haupt CC.2.2.8.B.1
Zero Exponents There are ten things to remember when you see a zero exponent Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. Anything to the zero power is equal to one. ANYTHING TO THE ZERO POWER IS EQUAL TO ONE!!!!
For Example 20 1230 -230
Negative Exponents Whenever you see a negative exponent, don t freak out. All you have to do is make the base number a fraction with a one over it, and then make the exponent positive. For example: 3-2 4-4 2-3
Multiplying Numbers with Exponents When multiplying numbers with exponents, you can just add the exponents if the base numbers/variables are the same. 23* 24 34* 312 45* 54
Dividing Numbers with Exponents If we add exponents when we multiply, what do you think we do when we divide? We subtract. But only if the base numbers are the same. 54/ 52 35/ 31 43/ 46
