Understanding Cosmic Rays: Types, Effects, and Theories
Cosmic rays are high-energy radiation particles originating from outer space, bombarding Earth's atmosphere. They can be classified based on penetration power and experimental observations. The intensity of cosmic rays varies with latitude, altitude, and direction. The Van Allen radiation belts surrounding Earth play a crucial role in trapping these particles. The phenomenon of cosmic ray shower and the development of the Bhabha-Heitler theory shed light on their origins and behavior.

Cosmic Rays Ms.Deekshitha U G Assistant professor Dept. of Physics
Cosmic rays are highly penetrating radiation consisting of charged as well as uncharged particles originating from outer space and bombarding earth s atmosphere at all times from all sides. Types depending on penetrating power 1. Hard cosmic rays 2. Soft cosmic rays
Types based on experiments carried out 1. Primary cosmic rays 2. Secondary cosmic rays
Cosmic ray shower: Cosmic rays appear to arrive in a group having common origin and it is known as cosmic ray shower Theory was developed by Indian Physicist Homi Jehangeer Bhabha and Austrian physicist Heitler and the theory is called Bhabha- Heitler theory Electron-positron pairs with photon from a common origin
Variation of Cosmic ray intensity: 1. Latitude Effect: intensity 45 N 45 S
2.Altitude effects intensity Altitude in Km
3.East- west Effect: Earth east west
4. Van Allen Radiation belts: Earth is surrounded by a torroidal or doughnut shaped region as belts are named as Vn Allen radiation belt The inner belts is mainly made of proton Outer belts contain electrons
