  1. UCU MEMBERS ARE STRIKING.

  2. UCU MEMBERS ARE STRIKING. WHY?

  3. Were taking strike action on TWO separate issues.

  4. Were taking action over changes to our pension.

  5. Because our employers are ignoring the experts

  6. Because our employers are ignoring the experts Last year, UCU strike action saw employers shelve their plans to radically redesign the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

  7. Because our employers are ignoring the experts Both sides agreed to take advice from an independent panel of pension experts.

  8. Because our employers are ignoring the experts The employers method of calculating pensions says staff need to pay more each month.

  9. Because our employers are ignoring the experts The joint expert panel reached a different conclusion, based on a different method of calculating costs.

  10. Because our employers are ignoring the experts We want universities to listen to the experts other changes since 2011 mean a typical USS member stands to lose around 240,000 in retirement.

  11. But thats not all!

  12. We are ALSO taking action because of

  13. falling pay

  14. falling pay Since 2009, our pay has been effectively cut by nearly 20% in real terms.

  15. the gender & ethnicity pay gap

  16. the gender & ethnicity pay gap The employers own analysis highlights that women and black and minority ethnic staff experience significant pay discrimination.

  17. precarious employment practices

  18. precarious employment practices Casual contracts staff employed on hourly or fixed-term and other non-permanent contracts remain entrenched.

  19. and, unsafe workloads.

  20. and, unsafe workloads. Staff are being asked to work harder and longer than ever before.

  21. STRIKING IS ALWAYS THE LAST RESORT

  22. STRIKING IS ALWAYS THE LAST RESORT UCU members continue to ask our employers and university leaders to work with us...

  23. STRIKING IS ALWAYS THE LAST RESORT The employers can end the strikes, and avoid widespread disruption for you, other staff, your families, and the community.

  24. BOTH STRIKES CAN BE RESOLVED

  25. BOTH STRIKES CAN BE RESOLVED The National Union of Students, MPs and others are calling on the employers to reconsider their hardline stance.

  26. BOTH STRIKES CAN BE RESOLVED The employers will not commit to meaningful negotiations!
