  4. Fort Sumter Date: April 1861 Location: Fort Sumter, South Carolina Significance: The first battle of the Civil War. Who Won: The Confederates

  5. Emancipation Proclamation Date: January 1863 Location: Washington D.C. Significance: The Emancipation Proclamation was an official declaration. President Lincoln declared that all slaves were free, and slavery was illegal.

  6. Gettysburg & Vicksburg Date: July 1863 Location: Gettysburg, PA & Vicksburg, MS Significance: Both battles are turning points of the war. Both sides lost thousands of lives. The North gained control of the war. Who Won: The Union

  7. The Battle of Sabine Pass Date: September 1863 Location: Texas Significance: The Union tried to invade Texas at the Sabine River. The battle restored The Confederates confidence . Who Won: The Confederates

  8. Surrender at Appomattox Date: January 1865 Location: Appomattox, VA Significance: General Lee (leader of the Confederate Troops) surrenders to General Grant (leader of the Union Troops). War ends and the North wins. Who Won: The Union

  9. The Battle of Palmito Ranch Date: May 1865 Location: Palmito Ranch, TX Significance: The last land battle of the Civil War is fought here. Happened AFTER the South had surrendered to the North Who Won: The Confederates
