How did the war officially Start? The Civil War began when Southern troops bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina www.civilwar.com
Why did this war even happen? The southern states wanted slavery and the northern did not. www.civilwar.com
What was the first battle? The first battle to take place was at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. South Carolina was also the first state to separate. www.civilwar.org

When they were not drilling, which made up a considerable portion of their time in camp, soldiers passed the time writing letters, playing games like checkers, dominoes and poker, drinking, smoking, whittling, making music and praying.
