  2. Draw an outline of Texas Label the capital and explain why Houston resigned as the governor of Texas.   3. Gainesville The Confederates hung 40 abolitionists because they were afraid of attacks from the North. Battle of Galveston John McGruder and the Confederates retook an important port which helped increase trade. Austin Houston resigned as Governor of Texas because he believed that states did not have the power to secede from the Union. He would not swear an oath to the Confederacy. Battle of Sabine Pass the Union tried to cut Texas off from the Confederacy, but Texas won. Battle of Palmito Ranch It was the last battle of the Civil War and it was a Confederate victory. Battle of Brownsville Texas and Union forces fought over trade routes between Mexico and TX. The Union Blockade the Union blocked ports to stop trade and supplies from the Confederacy.

  6. The Battle of Gettysburg The Union stopped the Confederate invasion north. Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. The Battle of Antietam the single bloodiest day in American history. Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation after the battle. The majority of the fighting occurred in Southern states like Virginia. The Anaconda Plan Created by Winfield Scott, it was designed to cut the Confederacy in half, and stop trade. Washington D.C. It was the capital of the Union. The two capitals were only 100 miles apart. The Battle of Vicksburg The Union victory, lead by Ulysses Grant, gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in half. Richmond The capital of the Confederacy was located in Virginia. The Union Blockade The blockade made exporting cotton and importing guns, medicine, and food difficult for the Confederacy. Fort Sumter An armed group of South Carolinians attacked the fort in defiance of the Union, declaring themselves an independent nation.
