Texas EMS Wristband Project Overview
The Texas EMS Wristband project, initiated in 2020, aims to enhance patient tracking during large-scale events by using wristbands with unique barcodes applied by EMS providers. These wristbands help link pre-hospital and hospital records, track patients during disasters, mass casualty incidents, and evacuations, and provide crucial data for various healthcare stakeholders. Discover how this project utilizes informatics to improve EMS transport tracking and benefits patients across Texas.

Conflict of Interest I have no conflicts of interest to declare. 2
Objectives Describe the Texas EMS Banding project Explain how it uses informatics to help track and trend EMS transport Describe how this information is used by the state, EMS agencies, and care providers for the benefit of patients 3
The Texas EMS Wristband Project The Texas EMS Wristband project originated in 2020 from Senate Bill 500 as a statewide project sponsored by the 86th Texas Legislature. Driven by a need for better patient tracking during large scale events across multiple EMS and Health Systems observed during hurricanes and mass evacuations. The goal is to provide a link to records or patient data delivered from EMS throughout the continuum of care for both daily hospital use as well as disaster and MCI. 4
Using data to track and trend EMS Places On & Records # (Scanned into ePCR) Hospital Stays On & Records # (Wristband scanned by triage Nurse into EMR) Wrist band follows the patient Through discharge or transfer to next location (Scanned by second EMS agency to provide to next destination) 5
EMS Wrist Band For Daily EMS and Hospital Use For Disaster or MCI use only The unique barcode is used to identify a patient to hospital emergency departments, incident commanders, emergency operations centers, and others in the event of disaster, MCI or other large scale event where patients may be distributed or moved throughout a region to multiple locations. 6
How Wristband Data is Used The Texas EMS Wristband is a band that is applied by EMS to any patient in the pre-hospital setting when transported to the hospital. It has a unique number that is documented by the EMS provider and by the hospital in their EMR system. To link pre-hospital and hospital records across disparate electronic medical record systems and throughout the continuum of care To track patients during mass casualty incidents (MCI), evacuations, and disasters 7
