Test construction and Administration Fourth grade English department College of Education ((for hum sciences)) Lecture 7 Asst.prof.Dr.Zainab Al-sadi
There are certain MCQ Item Violations: 1- Grammatical inconsistency between the stem and the response options, e.g. some of the options are verbs others are nouns. 2-Extraneous dues which can occur either within an item or within the test. (An extraneous clue that occur within the test is one where students can find the answers to a question somewhere else on the test paper in another section of the test. 3- 3 for 1 split item violation which occurs when three distractors are parallel and one is not. It is sometimes called "Odd man out."
4-Impure items are those that test more than one thing. 5- Apples and oranges violation is one where two responses options have no relation to the other two. 6-Subsuming response options where the intended answer and a very good distractor could both be correct. 7- Unparallel options occur when the response options are not parallel either in length or in grammatical consistency. 8- Gender bias in language is related to using vocabulary that relates to gender.
9- Sensitivity means that materials that have a negative emotional impact on students should be avoided. Test items content that could be upsetting or shocking to students are not advisable. 10- Double answer or key is the most commonly made among teachers. It occurs when more than one response option is correct. 11- No answer occurs when the author of the test item forgets to include the key among the list of response options. It happens when the item has undergone various revisions and rewrites. 12- Giveaway distractors occur when test-takers are able to improve their scores by eliminating absurd or giveaway distractors.
