  2. Know your Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) yes / no Do you have experience working with DEI issues of any kind? (Race & ethnicity, gender, LGBTQ+, disability, other forms of marginalization, etc.) (2 mins)

  3. Some Strategies to Support Equity and Inclusion Listening Checking in Advocacy Mentoring Bystander intervention Policy/syllabi Effective code of conduct Sense of belonging

  4. How Do We Increase DEI in the Geosciences? Activity 1. Write one or two types of DEI initiatives that are lacking in your program. 2. Write one or two types of DEI initiatives that are strong in your program. 3. Discuss a couple of reasons that make the initiative (in # 2) strong. 4. How do you plan to actively facilitate DEI in your program? 5. Are there strategies you would like to try or adopt? (10 mins)

  5. Checking our Biases What biases do we bring into the classroom? Defining issues & how they impact student learning and performance What strategies might we employ to make our classrooms more inclusive? Do you know your biases? Show of hands (take a moment to write down one or two ways that you are biased)

  6. Types of Biases & Assumptions Stereotype threat Imposter syndrome Implicit bias Microaggressions White privilege Take a moment to think about what each of these mean to you and share your thoughts with the group

  7. What You Can Do in Your Classroom to Mitigate Some Forms of Bias Share your pronouns Make room for student-driven activities Practice self affirmations (e.g. give students an opportunity reflect on what they are very good at) Reinforce students science identity (e.g. refer to your students as scientists, use diverse role models) Practice self-reflection during all interactions w/ students (e.g. being careful about reinforcing offensive jokes from students who may not know better )

How to Create a Community to Support Your DEI Efforts Stay in touch with your workshop cohort Participate in other NAGT and DEI activities at meetings/conferences Identify and work with allies Request trainings for DEI (e.g. with ADVANCEGeo) Unlearning Racism (e.g. with URGEoscience) Attend CHANGE (Cultivating cHampions and Allies Navigating Geoscience Equity) workshop series Develop group Code of Conduct for class, lab, etc.
