  3. COL is a learning community COL Purpose: To provide academic and technical education for serious high school students who desire to undertake college-level study. The two-year curriculum enables students to complete simultaneously a high school diploma and many of the requirements for an associate degree in either academic transfer or technical education options.

  6. Welcome/New Student Orientation August 3rd and 4th for Juniors August 10th and 11th for Seniors

  7. COL BELL SCHEDULE 1st Period: 7:15 8:45 2nd Period: 8:55 10:20 3rd Period 10:25- 11:50 4th Period 11:55 1:20

  8. Plan for The First Two Weeks August 5 High school classes begin. ALL JUNIORS begin Executive Intern on 2nd period. The first 7 days will be ACT prep. All other high school classes will live stream on their class period. There will be no classes on 8/12/20 due to Polk State Convocation. College Classes begin 8/17/20 online.

  9. First Day Polk State Classes . What about schedule problems? Email Dr. Peter Preston at pprestona@polk.edu with details about your schedule concern. IMPORTANT no college schedule additions after 7:00 am August 17. The office has final say over student schedules. Application for SAT voucher will determine eligibility for free lunch. Turn in filled out forms no later than 8/17. Packets contain lots of important information. Please review carefully. Turn in on or before Monday, 8/17 by: Scanned email In person/drop off (contact the office prior to coming) Postal mail

  11. Parent Volunteers and C.A.R.E. School Advisory Council (SAC) We need EVERYONE S participation. Collegians Advocating Responsible Education (C.A.R.E. Team) is our stakeholder organization. Attend meetings regularly. Volunteer for at least one committee.

  12. School Advisory Committee Meets 5 times a year. Must commit to attend all 5 meetings. Assists with school improvement and compliance of standards & determines recognition fund spending. We are in our preparation year for reaccreditation site visit. August 25 September 29 November 17 January 26 April 20

  13. FERPA Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Dual enrolled students have the rights of regular enrolled college students, except they cannot register for or drop classes on their own. A dropped class may result in a Resource class being added to the high school schedule. No grade reports for college classes. Ask your student about PASSPORT & CANVAS. Parents should not contact professors or request conference, but the COL administration can request information. Early Warning System Dr. Preston will follow up. Don t fear FERPA Ask your student frequently about college classes/work. Post the syllabus and keep track of dates.

  14. COL Information Attendance COL students are expected to attend every scheduled class and to be on time. Excessive absences & tardies can be a reason for dismissal from COL. Attendance will be taken daily in high school classes! High School classes meet 5 days a week, unless otherwise noted by each instructor. Parents should email Mrs. Thigpen (pthigpen@polk.edu) or Ms. Montanez (lmontanez@polk.edu) if student is going to be absent. Early Release Form (if we return to campus of the spring semester)-Allows students to leave campus early or arrive after 7:15am, depending on schedule. Does not give permission for students to come & go or to transport other students. Students leaving campus for appointments must check out in office.

  15. Frequently Asked Questions??? High School grades/attendance Grade reporting: High school interim reports mailed out for grades below C. High School report cards mailed home every 9 weeks. On 4X4, the 9 week grade is a grade in progress. The semester grade (January & May) is final. Attendance: Call out daily for high school classes.

  16. Frequently Asked Questions??? transcripts Student Scholastic Record (SSR) high school transcript. ALL grades post to SSR including college grades and are figured in high school grade point average. All dual enrolled students have a Polk State transcript. College grades and drops/withdrawals post to transcript. COL students must follow COL protocol for dropping a class. Retaking a dropped class or a failed class is at the discretion of the Principal. COL students will be assigned to a high school class for the remainder of the term following a college class drop. School provides insurance for all students. See list of covered items in packet.

  17. COL Information CHART lab is open M-TH until 3pm. Free printing, internet access, assistance for school related projects. Students will be issued instructional materials, such as textbooks, calculators, each term at no cost. Students are responsible for these materials and must reimburse COL/Polk State for any loss or damage. Each student will also receive a planner. *TI 84. Classroom rules Refer to each syllabus. The use of personal laptops, cell phones are restricted during class time. Student handbook www.polk.edu/col. School has zero tolerance for plagiarism/cheating. Refer to syllabus and Polk Student handbook. Bullying/harassment may be reported via email or Bully Box in Office. Polk State IDs will be issued to each student. Now required. Planners will be issued to each student. Bring planners every day. Parking Students may park in unrestricted areas marked with white lines. No decal is needed.

  18. COL Bus Information There will be no bus transportation in the fall semester. We may resume bus transportation in the spring semester if classes resume on campus.

  19. Community Service All levels of Bright Futures Scholarships have community service requirement. Community Service hours are posted to Scholastic Record and are posted on high school transcript. Community Service hours turned in to office. Forms available in office. Students are responsible for their own hours. After Oct 1, COL will only post hours completed since June 1, 2020 with documentation. Check the form in packet to verify turned in hours. Community Service hour totals posted in CHART lab. Check often.

  20. Expectations COL students are expected to Be college ready at graduation. Complete the 20 hour Work Based Learning internship and to present to a panel of adults during senior year. Be on time for EVERY class including CHART lab assignments, EI assignments, tutoring, math auditing etc. Take SAT/ACT before the end of fall term senior year and spring term junior year. Take advantage of supplemental assistance. Students will not be allowed to retake dropped or failed Polk State class without permission of the COL principal. Participate in seminars and test prep activities. Note all juniors will have COL professors both terms.

  21. Academic Review Academic performance and attendance will be reviewed in December, January, May, June & July. Reasons for dismissal include, but not limited: Excessive absences and tardies High School Graduation in jeopardy COL mentor. Look for emails. Let the mentor assist throughout the year. Mentor Mixers & Mentor Moments. Mentor is the EI instructor for juniors. Seniors will be assigned.

  22. What is New? Check Graduation requirements enclosed in packets. Math auditing is available. Schedule posted. College enforcing the 2.0 gpa rule and the 15 credit per term limit. Must complete Polk State online orientation https://www.polk.edu/admission-aid/student- orientation/ (Dr. Preston is your Academic Advisor) Safety protocol is in place and could be changed at any moment as directed by the College administration. PE/Athletic waiver
