  1. WELCOME! New Canaan High School Science Program

  2. INTRODUCTION Mr. Tim Haag, Science Department Co- Chair; AP Environmental Science, Physics and Astronomy Teacher Ms. Melinda Meyer, Science Department Co-Chair; K-8 Science Coordinator

  3. TONIGHTS AGENDA Overview Goals of NCHS Science Program Common Course Sequences Options for Freshmen FAQ s

  4. GOALS OF PROGRAM Introduce students to concepts, laws and processes of life and physical sciences Help students develop a deep understanding and application of scientific knowledge Challenge all students at an appropriate level without overwhelming them

  5. NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS Four Disciplines covered in NGSS: 1. Physical Sciences 2. Life Sciences 3. Earth and Space Sciences 4. Engineering, Technology, and Applications of Science 3-dimensional Approach to teaching standards: 1. Disciplinary core ideas 2. Crosscutting relationships 3. Science and engineering practices

  6. COMMON COURSE SEQUENCES 10th Grade 11th Grade 9th Grade 12th Grade Chemistry or Electives Physics or Electives or an AP Science Geo-physical Science Biology Biology or Honors Biology Chemistry or Honors Chemistry Physics or an AP Science Honors Geo- physical Science Electives or an AP Science Biology Chemistry Physics Chemistry or Honors Chemistry Physics or an AP Science Honors Biology AP Science

  7. OPTIONS FOR INCOMING FRESHMEN* Geo-physical Science Honors Geo-physical Science (M3 Algebra 1 concurrent) Biology (Geometry concurrent) Honors Biology (M3 Geometry concurrent) * Math prerequisites listed

  8. MATH PREREQUISITES Math prerequisite is two-fold: Insures appropriate math background for subsequent courses Insures student has appropriate reasoning skills for corresponding science course

  9. FAQ 1. What is my child s science placement based on? Math placement Reading proficiency Science reasoning test Other factors When will I find out my child s science placement? Within the next few weeks 3. What if my child disagrees with his/her placement? There is an appeals process which will be shared with you after placements are made. 2.

  10. FAQ 4. If my child is not placed in an honors course as a freshman, can they move to an honors course later on in high school? Yes, provided they have the math prerequisite and teacher recommendation. Does freshman science placement restrict enrollment in AP science courses in later years? To some extent, yes. All students take Biology at some level, and we would like to see as many students as possible take Chemistry and Physics. Some students take an AP science course in lieu of Chemistry or Physics, and some take an AP as a second science course in a single school year. Enrollment in Geo-physical Science as a freshman does not exclude a student from taking an AP science course later on. 5.

  11. WHAT IF I HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS? Visit the NCHS web site, and click on the link for Program of Studies. Go to the science section, where you will find general information as well as descriptions for each course that we offer. E-mail me through the NCHS web site.

  12. Thank you! Have a nice evening!
