merSETA 2023 Virtual InterChamber Conference Overview
In the merSETA 2023 Virtual InterChamber Conference, key focus areas included the status of occupational qualifications development, learning material development, and implementation challenges and successes. Notably, progress was made in aligning qualifications, re-submitting qualifications for registration, and developing learning material for various occupational qualifications. The conference also highlighted forthcoming initiatives, including the final stages of piloting learning material and the appointment of service providers for further qualification development.

Status of Occupational Qualifications Development 1. Fifty (53) Occupational Qualifications Registered 2. There were 109 historically registered qualifications, mostly suite (NQF Levels 2- 4). They have been re-aligned and yielded 41 Occupational Qualifications 3. Six (6) qualifications were resubmitted by QCTO 0n 27 September 2022 to SAQA for registration on the NQF 4. Six (6) qualifications have been processed in the Qualification Domain at QCTO Office to SAQA 5. Six (6) occupational and part qualifications were amended to comply with criteria for registration on the NQF and resubmitted to QCTO
Learning material development merSETA has developed learning material for five occupational qualifications listed below: 1. Vehicle Damage Quantifier - Implemented 2. Fitter and Turner - Implemented 3. Millwright - Implemented 4. Automotive Motor Mechanic - Implemented 5. Solar Photovoltaic Technician In the final planning stages of pilot: The plan is in its final stages to pilot the learning material from March 2023
Learning material development merSETA is finalising the appointment of service providers to develop learning material for the following four occupational qualifications: 1. Occupational Certificate: Paintless Dent Remover 2. Occupational Certificate: Wind Turbine Service Technician 3. Occupational Certificate: Metal Manufacturing processes and 4. Occupational Certificate: Transportation Electrician
Learning material development Once the courseware projects commence, a process to develop the following 4 qualifications is to be initiated: 1. Occupational Certificate: Vehicle Painter (Automotive and Marine Painter) 2. Occupational Certificate: Panel Beater 3. Plastics Manufacturing Machine Operator 4. Occupational Certificate: Automotive Clutch and Brake
Implementation of Occupational Qualifications Communication/Advocacy 1. Information is shared through merSETA website, under the Announcements link 2. Through provider capacity workshops 3. One on one with Skills Development Providers 4. Employers through Client Liaison Officers 5. Provide funding for COS pilot project to encourage partnerships with TVET Colleges
Challenges and Successes 1. Learner uptake in occupational qualifications 2. Review of Occupational Qualifications 3. Registration of occupational Qualifications at SAQA 4. Replacement qualifications 1. There are a total of 41 occupational qualifications that have replaced Historically Registered Qualifications
