  1. SIGNALS SO LET S NOW MAKE IT SIMPLE In the bad old days, it was High Encourage (Hey, Partner! Wakey wakey! Look at this big one!) Post modern? Low Encourage Partner is watching. Keep those good cards! 1

  2. You have 8 7 Partner leads the A against their 4 contract You play the 7 (of course). Partner perches, ponders, shrugs, and (what the heck); continues with K. You follow 8 All is revealed. Your 7 was encouraging 2

  3. Partner continues, knowing you can play either a winning or a ruff. The Heart Suit layout: A K 6 4 2 Q J 10 9 5 3 8 7 Declarer s Queen (West) winner is ruffed by you on the 3rd round of Hearts 3

  4. DISCARDS Here is the fielder s choice! At another time, we ll deal with some of the intricate options. At our level, it is wise to be simple. Remember! ECONOMY OF EFFORT Do not overtax the brain! 4

  5. Many of you may play low to encourage. If I discard a Club, isn t that an easy, obvious way to tell Partner I want her/him to lead a Club? It is very simple logic to discard something you do not need!!! AND Your discard can be a signal at the same time!!! Let us look at a case scenario 5

  6. Partner leads Q which wins. She/He then plays J which declarer wins the with the A. Which card did you (East) play at trick 1? - Why? 9 to discourage South is declarer in 3NT. K 8 6 Q 10 6 2 Q J 9 7 K 7 Q J 10 4 K 5 10 6 3 10 9 62 9 5 3 8 7 4 3 5 4 A Q J 8 Declarer next plays 3 rounds of s; A,K from hand and a 3rd round to Q. What is your discard on that 3rd ? 3 lower suit ( ) A 7 2 A J 9 A K 8 2 5 4 3 6

  7. If you discard 8, you hand declarer the unmakeable contract! Partner dutifully leads the 10 You overtake and cash 2 more clubs. Declarer heaves a happy sigh and claims the rest. Your 8 went to bed with the sunset. Always a good idea to Discard the rubbish, isn t it!!!??? K 8 6 Q 10 6 2 Q J 9 7 K 7 Q J 10 4 K 5 10 6 3 10 9 6 2 9 5 3 8 7 4 3 5 4 A Q J 8 A 7 2 A J 9 A K 8 2 5 4 3 7

  8. THE SIMPLE OPTION - McKenney Your first Discard is from the suit you do NOT want partner to lead: High spot card for the higher suit Low spot for the lower suit Suit you want partner to lead Suit led Discard High High or High Low or Low Low or 8
