Marie Curie By Claire Letso
Facts Maria Sklodowska Curie was born in Poland on November 7th1867 She was Scientist and a first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics Both her parents were teachers Her mother was a headmistress and her father taught Maths and Physics
Interesting facts She is the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two separate sciences She did her most important work in a shed She added two elements to the periodic table Her notebooks are still radioactive
Radioactivity Marie and her husband created a theory of Radioactivity They discovered two new elements :radium and polonium
Radium Radium discovered by Marie is one of the most radioactive and dangerous metals Radium is now used for many things For example doctors use it for killing cancer cells Marie used her research to develop portable x-ray machines in order to help soldiers on the battlefield
Fund Raising After World War 1,Marie started to raise money for a hospital The hospital raised money for the radiation research She collected enough money and equipment for a new laboratory She also supported world peace by serving on the council of the League of Nations
How she died Near the 1920 s ,Curie and many of her colleagues began to suffer from symptoms of cancer Carie began to loose her sight and surgeries did not help Doctors diagnosed her with blood anemia that happens when someone is exposed to too much rarioactivity but doctors didn t tell her what was going on She died when she was 66 years old and her belongings will be radioactive for another 1,500 years
Quotes by Marie Curie One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done I am one of those who think like Nobel ,that humanity will draw more good than evil from new discoveries Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. NOW is the time to understand more , so that we may fear less
