Purpose of this Tool This tool is designed to provide guidance to you on how to develop your leadership skills in two ways: Context Leadership is an important part of the role of any researcher throughout their career. Building your leadership skills and capabilities will enable you to get the best out of yourself and the colleagues you work with, build your career and contribute to creating a positive research culture in UCL. How to Build Leadership Skills and Capabilities 1. By showing how leadership evolves at key stages in your career. 2. The resources that are available to you to build your leadership skills, and which are most relevant and appropriate at your stage in your research leadership journey. What is Leadership for a Researcher? We believe that leadership for a researcher has four distinct elements or pillars of leadership. These are: How to Use this Tool? Use Page 2 to pinpoint where you are on your leadership journey. Locate your current role and review the emphasis for leadership at that level. Some questions to ask yourself: Developing yourself Taking your own development, growth and wellbeing seriously. Does this reflect how you currently balance the different aspects of your role? Do you need to build your leadership skills or abilities in any of these aspects? Developing others Nurturing the development of others. Working together If the answer to the question above is yes , then Page 3 will help. Here we have shown the different leadership resources and tools that are available to you and relevant to your leadership career stage. Collaborating within and beyond UCL. Advancing knowledge Intellectual leadership in your field. These are not static, the emphasis on each pillar will change as you advance as a researcher and leader. If you would like to explore the topic of research leadership further, Page 4 provides links to additional resources and reading.
