Leadership

is

an

important

part
of

the

role

of

any

researcher
throughout

their

career.
Building

your

leadership

skills

and
capabilities

will

enable

you

to

get
the

best

out

of

yourself

and

the
colleagues

you

work

with,

build
your

career

and

contribute

to
creating

a

positive

research
culture

in

UCL.

We

believe

that

leadership
for

a

researcher

has

four
distinct

elements

or

‘pillars’
of

leadership.

These

are:
Developing
yourself
Taking

your

own

development,
growth

and

wellbeing

seriously.
Nurturing

the

development

of

others.
Developing
others
Working together
Collaborating

within

and

beyond

Intellectual

leadership

in

your

field.
These

are

not

static,

the

emphasis
on

each

pillar

will

change

as

you
advance

as

a

guidance

to

you

on

how

to
develop

your

leadership

skills
in

two

ways:
1.
By

showing

how

leadership
evolves

at

key

stages

in

your
career.
2.
The

This tool provides guidance on developing leadership skills for researchers at UCL, focusing on four pillars of leadership: self-development, developing others, working together, and advancing knowledge. It helps in identifying your current role, assessing leadership emphasis, and utilizing available resources to enhance leadership capabilities at different career stages.

  • Leadership development
  • Researcher skills
  • UCL guidance
  • Career advancement

  1. Purpose of this Tool This tool is designed to provide guidance to you on how to develop your leadership skills in two ways: Context Leadership is an important part of the role of any researcher throughout their career. Building your leadership skills and capabilities will enable you to get the best out of yourself and the colleagues you work with, build your career and contribute to creating a positive research culture in UCL. How to Build Leadership Skills and Capabilities 1. By showing how leadership evolves at key stages in your career. 2. The resources that are available to you to build your leadership skills, and which are most relevant and appropriate at your stage in your research leadership journey. What is Leadership for a Researcher? We believe that leadership for a researcher has four distinct elements or pillars of leadership. These are: How to Use this Tool? Use Page 2 to pinpoint where you are on your leadership journey. Locate your current role and review the emphasis for leadership at that level. Some questions to ask yourself: Developing yourself Taking your own development, growth and wellbeing seriously. Does this reflect how you currently balance the different aspects of your role? Do you need to build your leadership skills or abilities in any of these aspects? Developing others Nurturing the development of others. Working together If the answer to the question above is yes , then Page 3 will help. Here we have shown the different leadership resources and tools that are available to you and relevant to your leadership career stage. Collaborating within and beyond UCL. Advancing knowledge Intellectual leadership in your field. These are not static, the emphasis on each pillar will change as you advance as a researcher and leader. If you would like to explore the topic of research leadership further, Page 4 provides links to additional resources and reading.
