  1. The 2016 17 NEW NPQH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME For those aspiring Headteachers (Primary, Special and Secondary) currently enrolled in GwE s 2016 17 NPQH programme. In fostering aptitude, aspiration and learning in every child, GwE views the development of a first-class leadership pipeline of aspiring Headteachers as the foundation for outstanding leadership in our schools. Effective leadership is recognised as key to building the successful schools of the future. Leadership, teamwork and coaching are the prime drivers that can turn any school into a great school; with literacy and numeracy part of the core foundations that determine every child s future and their potential.

  2. If you tell me, I will listen. If you show me, I will see. But if you let me experience, I will learn. (Lao-Tse. 5thCentury BC) Through experiential learning, group interaction and personal reflection, the New NPQH Development Programme will Uncover the core themes in leading oneself; so that then, and only then, can one lead and enable others. Explore the importance of attitude, influence, clarity and action in creating winning strategies and achieving outstanding results. Understand how one s perceptions and self-image lead to winning the hearts and minds of willing followers. Recognise the importance of self-motivation; (both intrinsic and extrinsic) in leading oneself and others. Learn to deal with fear and resistance, confronting difficult situations and challenging relationships. Build trust (the cornerstone in all teams); both in oneself and in others. In embracing the leadership values and behaviours that impact on one s life as a Headteacher, your teams and your school; the programme will engage participants in Welsh Government s six leadership standards of creating strategic direction, leading, learning and teaching, developing and working with others, managing the school, securing accountability and strengthening the community focus. These core elements are covered, not only during the programme, but in six 1-2-1 coaching sessions with experienced and practising GwE Headteachers. The New NPQH Development Programme will also provide the opportunity to develop a peer support circle in the GwE region following the programme. Day One: A series of practical projects develop the understanding and setting of objectives and strategy. Interactive sessions will explore the importance of perception and self-image. Group work will focus each participant on their own personal learning objectives in relation to their ILR. Day Two: Plenary, group and self-reflective sessions will expose participants to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and their importance in leadership, their preferred ways of learning and enabling others, and how we observe, learn and review performance and group work. Day Three: Through practical and interactive sessions, the programme will focus on influence, fear, resilience and personal accountability. Using video materials, the group will observe and review the six leadership standards in both a real and fictional setting. Participants will also receive post-programme guidance from an experienced Headteacher on taking the programme outcomes back into the school and wider community setting. Day Four: Brings the previous three days together with learning points and action planning at both group and individual level. A final session on personal trust and peer feedback is integral to the post-programme action planning and 1-2-1 coaching phases.

  3. Leadership through Experience (International), our partner in the Aspiring Headteachers Programme will use a wide range of practical and theoretical learning methods ,coupled with both individual and group coaching opportunities in a reflective, supportive and enjoyable, learning environment. How participants on our most recent leadership programme would endorse the Aspiring Headteachers Programme and its methodology: Thanks for last week, it was brilliant. Best development course I ve done ever. I got an awful lot out of it, I learned a lot about myself and reflect upon my role as a leader and how I affect and influence others - and I met some fantastic people. No one can deny that a Headteacher s role is incredibly diverse. Like George says, there are easier ways to make a living. But I came away from the course appreciating that what I had to do in order to become a more effective leader was to focus on what was important, tune out the distractions and think strategically and help others to do the same. After a lot of encouragement and feedback, by the end of the week ,we d gelled into a far more effective unit than the strangers who d turned up on Monday morning. And we ve continued to work together as an effective team since the course. I guess that makes the point, doesn t it? The proof is in the pudding! I would describe attending and being lucky enough to have experienced the LtEI programme as one of the biggest 'lightbulb' moments of my career to date. Although the programme provides some of the most challenging and thought provoking scenarios and situations, it is in my opinion, without doubt, the most insightful and valuable training experiences that a leader or manager could access. I have learnt to assess and reflect on my own strengths, expectations, emotions, actions and reactions, and identify and embrace my weaknesses, making them the focus for my personal growth and development. I would highly recommend this training for Headteachers regardless of their length of service, confidence or experience. The programme was superb. I personally went through a rollercoaster of emotions as I gained a real insight and awareness of my own personal leadership style and how it affects the people I lead and work with. We were inspired as a group to think and reflect on our roles as leaders. We bonded through experiential learning and as the week progressed we supported and encouraged each other through challenging tasks! I returned to school energised and with a clear focus, ready to inspire our team to take the next steps on our journey to excellence! The programme has had an extremely positive impact on myself as a Headteacher and has also brought together a group of leaders who have continued to work collaboratively, sharing ideas and supporting each other! An invaluable and unforgettable week! I have never been on a course that has had such a profound effect upon me and my practise. From the first minute I could sense I was going through an experience that would be different from anything I have ever done before. The course was indeed nothing like I had done before, innovative, thought provoking, extremely challenging but ultimately the most rewarding leadership course I have undertaken. I was worried I didn't have the time or head space to take in his course - now I worry about what would have happened had I not gone on the course. No question I am a better leader as a result of my experience with LtEI. LtEI was the most rigorous and enlightening days that held up a mirror to me professionally and emotionally. As a team, we went from 'zero to hero' ...and continue to reach for the stars! The positive impact of which has been, and continues to be, felt through every echelon of my school " During the programme, it was amazing to see how the bond betweenus developed. This is still now my support mechanism and I can call on the group any time needed for a boost of positivity or just to sound things out. The course helped me realise my strengths and my weaknesses and also how my behaviour effects others. It developed my reflection skills and made me think of how I deal with situations at school. I know feel in control and ready to lead the team. This truly was an inspirational course and I would recommend all Headteachers to attend the training. Diolch yn fawr
