Accommodating Educational Professionals:
Meeting Workplace Needs with AT
TWA-05
Lisa Mathess, Job Accommodation Network
Teresa Goddard, Job Accommodation Network (JAN)
Julie Davis, Job Accommodation Network
Educational professionals must perform a variety of tasks with a high level of skills. In
order to perform effectively, teachers with disabilities may require accommodations
tailored to both their needs and the requirements of the educational setting.
Combining assistive technology-based approaches with policy and schedule-based
accommodations can lead to successful outcomes, by avoiding the need for
reassignment and preventing unnecessary retirements and career changes. In this
presentation we will present data on the costs and benefits of workplace
accommodation as well as scenarios from case data in which educators with disabilities
were effectively accommodated via various modalities.

including its incorporation of universal design and web accessibility principles and the
ways in which it fosters independence while enhancing the efforts of teachers, parents,
and other team members. This overview is followed by presentation and discussion of
three case studies illustrating the impact of platform use on the lives of transition
students and adults with autism and intellectual disabilities and those who support
them. We will also discuss the implications of these tools for aging users who may
benefit from better supports for self-management, executive functioning, and team
coordination.
Advocating and Determined: How to Increase
Self-awareness and Autonomy for Young
Adults
TWA-13
Ms. Sayard Bass, SWCCCASE
As students prepare to leave the K-12 environment many things change. They are ready for work,
dorms, parties, whatever may come their way. Freedom. For our students who utilize assistive
technology, and those with IEPs and 504s there is an additional freedom, setting your own goals.
When assistive technology is involved there are many ways we can integrate teaching students to
take control in the areas of goal setting and contributing to their own plans and future. Beyond the
tool there is much we can influence to ensure student success as they graduate and move into a
future they have made their goal. We have the evidence that increased knowledge of assistive
technology makes students more successful in post-secondary environments. We have the ability
to implement and capacity to build robust assistive technology consideration. In learning about
transition we create a bridge where the IEP team (student, parents, staff) can be involved in
implementing assistive technology and using these tools to set goals for post secondary life.
Transition and Assistive technology are very intertwined for students in this life changing period.
Come become more informed to strengthen your practice to empower your students and teams.
Back on Track with the Interactive Process:
When Accommodations Go Off the Rails
TWA-02
Teresa Goddard, Job Accommodation Network (JAN)
Lisa Mathess, Job Accommodation Network
This training offers an in depth look at applying JAN’s six-step interactive process to
resolve perplexing accommodation scenarios. Participants will discuss strategies for
overcoming various accommodation challenges including: training supervisors on how
to appropriately recognize and respond to both routine and atypical accommodation
requests; avoiding common missteps when gathering medical documentation;
addressing policy conflicts; proposing alternate accommodation ideas; implementing
interim and trial accommodations; addressing effectiveness; transition planning; and
integrating assistive technologies into existing workflows. Using real life
accommodation examples drawn from JAN case data, presenters will illustrate practical
approaches for balancing the needs of both employers and workers with disabilities.
Assistive Technologies to help Organization &
Productivity
TWA-12
Mr. Kevin Grogg, Ernst & Young
Since the start of the pandemic, the greatest percentage increase in assistive
technology (AT) cases within EY has involved difficulties with focus,
organization, priorities, and time management. Before March 2020, the AT
team averaged one call per week in these areas. Currently, it’s closer to one
case per day. This presentation will demonstrate the individualized solutions
produced through brainstorming sessions between the AT team at EY and
customers.
Combining DIY and Purchased AT for Possible
Workplace Solutions
TWA-09
Mrs. Julie Dutchess, North Carolina Assistive Technology Program (NCATP)
The presentation focuses on combining DIY and low to high tech AT for
possible workplace solutions in various settings. Multiple DIY materials will be
discussed as well as several AT items used to assist individuals of various
abilities (sensory, cognitive, physical, mental health). The presenter will utilize
videos, images, case studies and physical AT items to highlight ways to
implement AT in the workplace throughout the presentation.
