Chapter 8.2 Review 1b. Why are the 800s to the 1100s considered a golden age for Japanese literature and art? Nobles supported the arts and made great advances in literature, painting, calligraphy, and drama. 1c. Do you think women in Heian had more rights and freedoms than women in other societies? Why or why not? Women were excluded from politics and expected to serve but were able to write and take part in court society. 2a. What were two forms of Buddhism that developed in Japan? Zen and Pure land Buddhism developed in Japan. 2b. How was religion among Japan s nobles different from religion among the common people? Nobles took part in many rituals and ceremonies, whereas the common people simply chanted Buddha s name to help meditate and reach an enlightened state.
