Initiative for Quality Education: Meritorious Schools in Punjab

A society in Punjab, registered under the 1960 Society Registration Act, runs ten Meritorious Schools providing free education to talented students. The initiative aims to help students from rural and poor backgrounds access quality education and pursue professional careers. The schools have achieved remarkable results with students excelling in various entrance exams. Governed by top officials, the Society is fully funded by the Punjab government. The schools offer streams in non-medical, medical, and commerce, housing over 5000 students in total.

  1. "SOCIETY FOR PROMOTION OF QUALITY EDUCATION FOR POOR AND MERITORIOUS STUDENTS OF PUNJAB" The Society is Registered under Punjab Society Registration Act 1960 and six Meritorious Schools were opened on 04.08.2014 at Amrtisar, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Lduhiana, Mohali and Patiala. In 2015 a school exclusively for girls in humanities stream was started at Talwara Township and three new schools were started at Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Sangrur in August 2016. All ten schools are residential for class 10+1 and 10+2 and affiliated to Punjab School Education Board.

The aim of the Society is to facilitate Meritorious Students from Govt. schools (scoring more than 80% marks in 10thexam) from rural and poor background to seek admission in Professional Colleges at All India Level. The students are provided free education, lodging/boarding, books, uniform etc. The first batch from Meritorious Schools passed out in June 2016 in which 31 students cleared JEE (Advance) exam for admission in IITs/NITs, 158 students cleared JEE (Main) exam for admission in good Engineering Colleges, 56 students cleared the exam for Medical Colleges and 47 for Chartered Accountants. This result is a record in the history of Punjab. extra teaching,

  3. The Society is fully funded (Grant-in-aid) by the Govt. of Punjab/ funds from PEDB. The Hon ble Chief Minister, Punjab is the Chairman of the Board of Governors with absolute powers (both Financial and Administrative) and the Society. Chief Secretary to Govt. of Punjab is Chairman of the Executive Committee. As on date there are 827 boys and 2002 girls in class 10+1 and 920 boys and 2232 girls in class 10+2 (Total Strength 5981 students).

  4. MERITORIOUS SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF PUNJAB

  5. Summary Initial Plan: -11schools @ one per two districts. Established:- 10 Note: Meritorious School, Talwara only for girls and humanities Stream. Remainder Schools have Non-Medical, Medical and Commerce Streams.

  6. CHORONOLOGICAL SEQUENCE OF OPENING OF MERITORIOUS SCHOOLS Capacity:1000 students in each school 650 Girls and 350 Boys Non-Medical, Medical and Commerce streams are taught. It is mandatory for all students to stay in campus.

Punjab State is the first state of India and perhaps whole of Asia to take such a noble initiative for the economically backward classes from rural areas, and the dignitaries who visited Meritorious School in recent past and appreciated the cause are as under:- Meritorious School 1) Hon ble President of Mauritius 2) Hon ble Union Minister for Finance Sh.Arun Jaitely. 3) Hon ble Union Minister for HRD Smt.
