Independent Living Skills Being Healthy
Instructions Please work through this PowerPoint in your own time. It will be updated weekly and new sections will be added as we go along. There will be hyperlinks inserted to make it easier for you to find your way around (YOU JUST NEED TO CLICK WHERE AND WHEN INDICATED!!). Please encourage the students to participate in as many of the activities as they can. I understand some of the activities may be slightly unusual and there may be a few barriers put up. You never know they may enjoy them. You might too! There will only be a very limited need for students to record any evidence. However I will need confirmation from Parents or Carers to say that the tasks set have been completed. This will enable me to put students forward for AQA Unit Awards called Healthy Living: Mindful Eating , Healthy Living: Personal Hygiene and Personal Wellbeing

Pre-Topic Introduction What have we covered before? We have looked at Healthy Lifestyles before in the Autumn Term: You looked at how to eat healthily and how exercise helps with having a healthy lifestyle. We are going to look at: Relaxation Techniques and how relaxation can help reduce stress, anxiety and anger and how it contributes to a healthy lifestyle Personal Hygiene and how this contributes to a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. How eating can help with reducing stress and anxiety.
Week 1 First of all Do you remember our work on Growth Mindset? If you don t, don t worry. I would like you to try and have a Growth Mindset and not a Fixed Mindset when doing this work. You can all do the activities. There may be new things to try don t be scared about trying them. Lets look at what Growth and Fixed Mindsets are to remind ourselves.
Websites to start us off. For information for parents and carers on how to help their child to develop a Growth Mindset see the website below https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/grownups/help-your-child-try- new-things For information for students to revise what the different mindsets are try the following Class Dojo YouTube videos (Growth Mindsets for Students: Episodes 1 to 5). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz49YsEVcb4&list=PLdgGLo_ -QNwEfIPz-4H6ZDYxhKdzBD1bV During the week work go through the video clips. There are five clips. Do them at your own pace. Each one is about 3 4 minutes long. Check understanding by talking about the clip.
What is a Fixed Mindset? (Summary) Do you give up on challenging tasks or when you make mistakes? Do you avoid tasks that you have not been good at before? Do you think that being good at something is a skill you are born with and you cannot control? Do you often say There s no point! when given some things to do? If you have answered yes to these you have a Fixed Mindset. You find it difficult to motivate yourself to do things and can t be bothered with new things or things you have not done well at.
What is a Growth Mindset? (Summary) Do you bounce back easily? (You try again if you don t get it right first time) If you can t do something do try and find a different way to do it? Do you explore how you can do things better? Do you think that by trying hard you can get better at something? If you have answered yes to these you have a Growth Mindset. You are willing to try new things. You don t mind making mistakes and will keep working until you have completed your task.
Next Week Now we understand our brains a little more we will look at Relaxation and how it can reduce anxiety and stress
