Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 1
Make no mistake: o Being Lost - separated from God by sins - is serious business Although salvation is a gift from God o We must choose to accept it o God s gift must be claimed Being the gift giver, God alone defines how we do so o That is revealed in The Bible: The Source of Truth (2nd Pillar) This Plan of Salvation is so important that the Bible makes it redundantly clear Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 2
The truth about how we claim Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins can be discovered in 3 different ways: 1) Examining the teachings of Jesus during His ministry 2) Great Commission parting instructions to Apostles 3) What Apostles taught & did to establish/grow the Church Because all Scripture is inspired by God all 3 approaches must yield the same result o In fact, this is a way to check our answer (i.e., Truth Test) o All Scriptures have to agree there can be no contradictions o If we detect a conflict, we have made a mistake Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 3
What does the Bible reveal? Jesus spoke of 4 things that He said are necessary for salvation o Since each one is individually required, All 4 must be satisfied to achieve salvation Taken collectively those 4 are sufficient for salvation What are those necessary conditions? Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 4
1st, one must believe in Jesus as the Son of God o In John 8:24, Jesus said, unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins - What is meant by I am He One sent by the Father (vs 16) Claimed to be Son of God Came down from heaven (John 6:38) o Belief in Jesus as deity is absolutely essential If not the Son of God, then Jesus is just an ordinary man Worse yet: A liar & a sinner incapable of saving us Were that the case, we would all be hopelessly lost destined for Hell Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 5
2nd, one must repent a change in heart, turn away from sin o Luke 13:3, 5, unless you repent, you will all likewise perish This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:5-7) o To repent: get back on track live a holy life walk in light o To avoid sins that separated us from God in the first place o Evidence of sincere desire to restore a relationship with God Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 6
3rd, one must confess our belief in Jesus o Apostle Paul said, with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation (Rom 10:10) o Everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven (Matt 10:32) o Our confession is attribution for our repentance o It is acknowledging Jesus as the reason for our change in heart & change in behavior pursue holiness/righteousness Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 7
Finally, one must be baptized for the forgiveness of sins o In speaking to Jews on Day of Pentecost, Peter said to them, Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38) o Bible baptisms do not involve sprinkling or pouring water over the head of an individual o A Scriptural baptism must adhere to the meaning of the Greek word found in the inspired text of the New Testament Baptism is a complete immersion under water Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 8
o In Rom 10:13, Paul said: Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved o Baptism is how we make that call: baptism now saves you not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Pet 3:21) o In being baptized in His name, believers are confessing Jesus as the Son of God Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 9
What is the point of being immersed in water? (Rom 6:3-8) Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 10
In these verses, Paul explains the logic of baptism o Just as Jesus died was buried rose from the dead o When we are baptized into Christ Buried with Him through baptism into His death Our old sinful self is put to death Buried under the waters of baptism And we rise a new creature, free from sin Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 11
o Just as Christ was raised from dead so we too can then walk in a newness of life as a Christian o Notice Rom 6:5 is conditional: If we are united with Christ in likeness of His death, Then we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection o Our cleansing and life with God in Heaven depends on Being united with Him in likeness of His death (Baptism) o Baptism is essential for our salvation It is the final step in claiming the gift of salvation It marks the instant when our sins are washed away Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 12
Now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 6:22-23) Now after examining Christianity through the 5 Pillars of Truth: o What will you do with Jesus? Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 13
If you are not a Christian o You are lost o Facing a hopeless eternity - separated from God But there is still time fix that o If you Believe in Jesus o Are willing to Repent turn to purse a life of Holiness o Confessing Him as the Son of God o And be Baptized - immersed in water for the forgiveness of your sins You can be saved securing a future with God in Heaven Pillar 5 R. S. Chambers 14
