Importance of Baptism in Salvation Process

Why should I be baptized?
Preliminary
 observations

What is baptism?
A transliterated word
(
βαπτίζω
, baptizō) that means to dip,
submerge, immerse one.
The very word implies that it involves being
submerged under water.
Much of scripture bears this out –
Romans 6:3-4, Acts 8:38-39, John
3:23
 – John baptizing, “
much water there
This invalidates pouring and sprinkling as
Biblical baptism
Preliminary
 observations

Baptism alone does not save us
Baptism is part of a process that leads to
our salvation.
Salvation begins with the grace of God
Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 2:11
Baptism requires faith
– it is an act of
faith.
John 8:24, Mark 16:16,
e.g. Acts.
This is why we do not baptize infants.
Preliminary
 observations

Baptism is not a meritorious work
In baptism, we do NOT earn our
salvation.
Some dismiss baptism the necessity of
baptism to be saved, calling it a work,
because it is doing something.
The premise is that if we need to be
baptized, then our salvation is not by
faith.
Preliminary
 observations

Baptism is not a meritorious work
In baptism, we ARE doing something –
namely we are obeying God. This is
what sets us apart from the lost.
Obedience IS necessary –
Hebrews 5:9, Matthew 7:21-23,
Luke 6:46
2 Thessalonians 1:8
Preliminary
 observations

Baptism is not a meritorious work
So if by works, you mean we need to
take action – then I affirm baptism is a
work.
BUT, so is faith –
1 Thessalonians
1:3, John 6:28-29
So is confession –
Romans 10:9-10
James 2:17, 24
– tells us we show
our faith by our works
Preliminary
 observations

Baptism is not a meritorious work
But I deny that we can EARN our
salvation – EVER!
AND I deny that baptism is a meritorious
work.
Baptism is simply about obeying God as
we shall see.
Preliminary
 observations

God’s plan of salvation (our part) also
includes:

Hearing the word
Romans 10:17

Believing in Him
Mark 16:16, Acts
2:37, 16:30-31
Belief is so fundamental that it can be used
to summarize our part in obeying the
gospel.
Consider
Acts 18:8 –
Crispus,
cf. 1 Corinthians 1:14
Preliminary
 observations

God’s plan of salvation (our part) also
includes:

Repentance
Acts 2:38, 17:30-31

Confessing Jesus
Romans 10:9-
10, Acts 8:37
Only after all these actions is one ready
to be baptized.
Why be baptized?

Simply stated, it is what God tells us to
do!
 Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:16
– the “great commission”
Romans 6:3-4,
describes baptism as
a burial and that which puts us into
contact with the death of Jesus
Galatians 3:27,
as many as have
been baptized into Christ…
Why be baptized?

Simply stated, it is what God tells us to
do!
 Colossians 2:11-12,
circumcision
made without hands
1 Peter 3:20-21,
Just as Noah and
his family were saved through water, so
“baptism now saves us”… a reaction to
our faith

Baptism is a crucial step in the process leading to salvation, integrating faith, obedience, and God's grace. While baptism alone does not save, it symbolizes our faith and obedience to God's plan of salvation. It is not a meritorious work that earns salvation but a demonstration of our commitment to follow God's commands. Through baptism, we align ourselves with God's will and participate in the transformative journey towards redemption. Understanding the significance of baptism in the context of salvation deepens our spiritual understanding and strengthens our relationship with God.
