thought
God
’s saving power
would look like this?”

God’s saving power defeats the enemy

(verses 53:4-6, 10)

1.
We must align our understanding with
God’s will as to why Christ suffered
(4, 10)
2.
We must see ourselves as the reason for
Christ’s suffering
(5-6)
3.
We must trust the Savior to save the day!

“…the punishment that
brought us peace
 was on him
and by his wounds
we are healed
.”
Isaiah 53:5
II.
 God’s astonishing message about a
Savior can lead to an astonishing
result!

“my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and
lifted up and highly exalted.”
 (52:13)
“Who has believed our message?”
(53:1)
“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and
believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not
be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
(John 5:24)

In a world where success is the measure
and justification of all things, the figure of
him who was sentenced and crucified
remains a stranger.

pastor, and martyr (1906–1945)

It does seem unfair for the innocent to die for the guilty. But
what is God to do when all have sinned and wandered off
like stray sheep? Covenant law demands punishment, but
punishment in this case would mean annihilation of what
God has created. God’s justice, as demanded by the law,
must be satisfied. To satisfy his justice, he does something
seemingly unjust. He punishes his sinless servant, the only
one who has not strayed off! In the progress of biblical
revelation, we discover that the sinless servant is really
God in the flesh, who offers himself because he is
committed to the world he has created. If his justice can
only be satisfied if he himself endures the punishment, then
so be it. What appears to be an act of injustice is really
love satisfying the demands of justice!
