History and Tradition of Mothering Sunday Celebrations
Mothering Sunday, originating from a tradition set by the Christian Church 400 years ago, celebrates the Mother Church concept and calls for families to visit the largest church near them on the 4th Sunday of Lent. This day is a time to express gratitude to those who care for us, encourage us, forgive us, and support us through various challenges. The celebration reflects on the loving care provided by individuals and the church community.

About 400 years ago the Christian Church decided, that on the 4thSunday in Lent, families should visit the largest church or cathedral near to where they live. This was called the Mother Church- and so the day became known as Mothering Sunday
Loving God, we give you thanks for all who care for us, who have encouraged us and helped us grow, who have forgiven us, and cared for us when we are unwell, who have supported us when times were hard, who have challenged us, who have told us about you. Thank you, Lord. Amen
