  1. Mix N Match the key words Can you find the key words and the hidden message? Allies A person who is serving on the Home Front Civilian A person (in this case child) who is removed from a place of danger or disaster area Churchill A person who served in the Armed Forces Refugees 8th May 1945, Victory in Europe. Evacuees Friends, people or countries that work together. Using the internet look up some pictures of the Blitz in London. Choose one of the pictures and write a personal account of what you are seeing. Remember to write using all your senses. Service personnel Prime Minister of Great Britain during WW2. Veteran People who have been forced to leave their country due to war, violence, conflict or persecution. VE Day A person who is serving in the armed forces.

  2. WW2 KEY EVENTS Create a visual timeline either on the computer or draw it. Create a menu for the week from the rations below. You also have vegetables that are not rationed and some fruit, maybe apples, pears or plums. 1939 Hitler invades Poland on 1 September. Britain and France declare war on Germany two days later. 1940 Rationing starts in the UK. Churchill becomes Prime Minister of Britain. British Expeditionary Force evacuated from Dunkirk. 1941 The Blitz continues against Britain's major cities. Japan attacks Pearl Harbour, and the US enters the war. 1942 Mass murder of Jewish people at Auschwitz begins. 1943 Surrender at Stalingrad marks Germany's first major defeat. Allied victory in North Africa enables invasion of Italy to be launched. Italy surrenders, but Germany takes over the battle. British and Indian forces fight Japanese in Burma. 1944 D Day: The Allied invasion of France. Paris is liberated in August. 1945 Auschwitz liberated by Soviet troops. Russians reach Berlin: Hitler commits suicide and Germany surrenders on 7 May. After atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrenders on 14 August. Woolton Pie WW2 in Music A Celebratory Meal for VE Day (Give it a go)!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=041nXAAn714 Ingredients For the pastry 225g/8oz wholemeal flour 2 tsp baking powder pinch salt 85g/3oz margarine or lard 110g/4oz cold mashed potato milk, for glazing For the filling 400g/14oz cauliflower, roughly chopped 400g/14oz parsnips, peeled and roughly chopped 400g/14oz carrots, peeled and roughly chopped 400g/14oz potatoes, peeled and roughly chopped into bitesize pieces 3 spring onions, roughly chopped 1-2 tsp yeast extract (Marmite) 1 tbsp oatmeal 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley (or 1 tsp dried) salt and freshly ground black pepper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF_2sNjgNKQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsM_VmN6ytk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuHYnzWHS7o Activity Click on each of the above links and listen to all five of the music tracks. Why do you think that these were all popular tunes from the time. Method To make the pastry, mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add the margarine or lard and rub in using your fingertips. Add the mashed potato and bring together to form a dough, add a splash of water, if needed. Wrap in cling film and place in the fridge for at least an hour. Research other tunes from the 1940s. VE Day for Children If you had to create a soundtrack to our current situation on lockdown what tunes would you choose? Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Place the vegetables, yeast extract, rolled oats, salt and pepper in a large saucepan and just cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until most of the water has evaporated and the sauce has thickened. Allow to cool. Roll out the pastry until it will cover the top of the pie dish. Place on top and brush with a little milk. Watch the two different experiences in the above You Tube clips. Write a diary entry written on 8th May 1945 from the viewpoint of an evacuee who is not with their family and another from the viewpoint of a child celebrating with at least their mother and other friends. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden-brown. To serve, cut a slice of pie and place onto a serving plate and serve with your favourite greens and gravy.

Name three things that people did to celebrate the end of WW2. What event took place on Black Saturday? Look at the photo. A) Brainstorm at least five adjectives around the source. When did rationing start in Great Britain? When did it finish? In what year did America enter the war and why? What was the name of the King of Great Britain during WW2? B) Use at least one of these adjectives in a sentence explaining C) What is going on in the source. How is our Queen related to this King? Give three reasons why we should remember VE Day. D) Using PEE to structure you re answer explain what is going on in the photograph.
