Philemon 10-16 I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me. I am sending him back. Your therefore receive him, that is, my own heart, whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel. But without your consent I wanted to
Philemon 10-16 do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary. For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

Onesimus name means profitable, and Paul makes a play on words on how unprofitable Onesimus once was, but how, after his conversion, Onesimus truly began to live up to his name. Tradition has it that Onesimus became a trusted and respected leader in the church. Everyone in the Bible William Barker
Tradition insists that Philemon became the bishop of Colossae, and with his wife, son, and faithful slave, Onesimus, was stoned to death during Nero s brutal reign. Everyone in the Bible William Barker

Mark was part of the Christian community from the first. After Barnabas, Mark s uncle, and Paul came to Jerusalem with money from the church at Antioch, Mark returned to Antioch with them, and a year later accompanied them on the first missionary journey. Mark, however, decided to return home after the trio had visited Cyprus and
had landed in southern Asia Minor preparatory to going inland to the wild interior. Paul was so annoyed at Mark s desertion that he refused to take Mark on the second missionary trip, and parted company with Barnabas. Mark went to Cyprus with his uncle a second time. The next several years of Mark s career are obscure. Ten or twelve
years later, Paul, writing to the Colossians, asked them to welcome Mark indicating that Mark was in Rome, that Mark and Paul were cordial toward one another again, and that Mark was about to leave for a tour of the churches in the East. A couple of years after this, we can tell by Paul s second letter to Timothy, Mark was away from Rome but
needed by Paul at Rome. From 1stPeter, it would seem that Mark joined Peter at Rome, possibly before Paul s execution. Both Paul and Peter used affectionate terms for Mark, indicating that he was a close associate of both great apostles. Everyone in the Bible William Barker
2 Timothy 4:11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.

Colossians 1:3-8 We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world,
Colossians 1:3-8 and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.

Colossians 4:14 Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.
Colossians 4:14 Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.
The beloved physician, Luke was one of the Apostle Paul s co-workers, and the author of the third gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. He was an educated non-Jew who was converted to Jesus Christ without first becoming a Jew. Some think he might have come from Philippi, others from Antioch in Syria. Luke Joined Paul at Troas on the Apostle s second missionary journey,
and went to Philippi with him. Six years later he accompanied Paul on his third missionary journey, which ended at Jerusalem, and faithfully stayed with Paul on the wretched voyage to Rome. Loyal Luke was the only companion to stay with Paul until the very end of the Apostle s final imprisonment in Rome. Everyone in the Bible William Barker
Colossians 4:14 Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.
Philemon 23-24 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers.
One of the Apostle Pauls co-workers and esteemed friends for a time, Demas shared Paul s hardships during the first part of his prison term in Rome. Demas even joined Paul in sending personal greetings to fellow Christians at Colossae and to Philemon s family. Later, in love with the present word, (2 Timothy 4:10) Demas forsook Paul. It would seem either that Demas was lured away from the faith by some enticement or that he found the going too hard. There is no word about Demas subsequent career, and no tradition that he ever returned to the faith. Everyone in the Bible William Barker
1 Corinthians 3:15 If anyone s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
