  1. Gallaher 3rd Grade Open House Elementary School September 22, 2021

  2. Classroom Procedures Gallaher is a Positive Behavior Support (P.B.S.) school. Students earn Panther Paws by following the P.A.W.S. principals of the school: Practice problem solving Act responsibly Win respect Show kindness Students can use their Panther Paws to participate in monthly celebrations, visit the P.B.S cart, and cash out in the classroom. *September P.B.S. Celebration

Leader in Leader in me me Leader in Me (LiM) is an evidence-based, comprehensive-school improvement model developed in partnership with educators that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Each day we will focus on a habit to work on for school and home. This is a PROCESS not a program

  4. Reading & Writing: Benchmark Benchmark Literacy is a comprehensive, research- proven program that empowers teachers with tools for vertically aligned K- 6 reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language instruction. Builds foundational skills such as phonics, word study, and fluency. While using the program, students learn and practice a variety of reading skills and strategies, including: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Inferring Cause and Effect Drawing conclusions Context clues Understanding/Analyzing the characters Visualization Author s Purpose 6. 7. Writing - Persuasive, informational, author s purpose, research.

  5. Reading Intervention (Now MTSS): Students receive explicit instruction based on baseline assessments in both math and reading. Tier 1: Students are working at, or above, the benchmark level and will practice effective reading strategies, and skills, using on or above grade-level texts. Tier 2: Students require strategic support to increase their decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills, using appropriate texts. Tier 3: Students require intensive support. Students will work with RtI teachers, and focus on areas of need using appropriate texts.

  6. Mathematics: The Bridges program provides opportunities for students to build their understanding of mathematical concepts and ample practice to master important skills. Most importantly, all concepts are taught, and practiced, within a strong problem-solving environment, insuring that students become life-long problem solvers. The program correlates with the Common Core Standards, and focuses on: 1. Operations & Algebraic Thinking 2. Numbers & Operations in Base 10 3. Numbers & Operations- Fractions 4. Measurement and Data 5. Geometry Students will receive additional support during daily, math intervention activities. The intervention groups are determined using a variety of data sources. Math Assessments: Pre-assessments, check-in tests, end-of-module tests, fact tests, journal work, teacher observations, I-Ready testing, and Smarter Balance.

  7. Science: Science: Students will explore different science concepts using inquiry-based curriculum kits: Balancing Forces Inheritance and Traits Environments and Surival Weather and Climates

  8. Social Studies: Students will explore different, social studies concepts: 1. Civics- Students will learn that respect for others, their opinions, and their property is a foundation of a civil society in the U.S. They will also learn that Americans have distinct rights, responsibilities, and privileges. 1. Geography- Students will study maps and globes and explore places and regions 1. Economics- Students will learn about human wants and resources; and how producers and consumers depend on goods and services. 1. History- Students will use artifacts and documents to gather information about the past. Social Studies Assessments: Journal prompts, student explanation sheets, teacher observations, transfer tasks, end of unit assessments.

  9. Preferred Activity Time (P.A.T.) -Preferred Activity Time occurs during the first 10 minutes of recess time. Students can earn their 10 minutes of P.A.T. time by exhibiting appropriate behaviors, following rules & procedures, and completing class work & homework assignments. -All students will participate during the final 10 minutes of recess time. -All of the 3rdgrade teachers use the Class DoJo computer app to monitor students behavior. You should have received an invitation to monitor your child s behavior via e-mail.

  10. REPORT CARDS With a new strategic plan and a renewed commitment to coming together for excellence, the Christina School District will continue grading on a standards- based grading system. The K-5 report card will provide a more accurate view of a student s progress in academic and behavioral areas. Factors like responsibility, participation, effort and attendance are reported separately, and not as an indicator of a student s academic performance. We are using a 1,2,3,4 rating scale

  11. School Procedures Volunteers: any adult wanting to volunteer at Gallaher (Field Trips, Field Day, etc.) must complete 4 forms, which must be submitted to the office. It takes about a month for your information to be verified! Absences: All absence notes must be sent in within 5 days after the absences occur, or the students absent will be marked as unexcused. Any students have 18, or more, unexcused absences will be considered truant. You will receive letters if your child has excessive absences. COVID: If your child is officially quarantining, your student s homeroom teacher will provide grade level learning opportunities for the time they re out. Please contact your child s teacher for specific information. Early Dismissal: Please send in a note if you know your child will need an early dismissal or if there is a change in dismissal procedures. Without a note, the teacher must follow the original dismissal plan for each child. Please keep early dismissals to a minimum as we teach up until the last five minutes of the day. **Please contact the secretary and your child s teacher, if your contact information changes. If an emergency arises, we need to be able to contact you as soon as possible. P.T.A: The P.T.A. provides many fun and enriching opportunities during the school year (assemblies, field day, etc.). Please become a member of the P.T.A. and show your support for Gallaher .

  13. What you can do to help your student be successful! 1. Check your child s agenda and take home folder every night! 1. Make sure that he/she is practicing his/her math facts. 1. Set an example for learning. Read in front of your child visit museums.. watch educational programs play learning games. 1. Hold your student accountable! If the homework is sloppy, discuss the importance of doing quality work, and require him/her to fix the work. 1. If your child gets a note or call for poor behavior, give him/her a consequence at home. Support the teacher s authority. 1. Attend parent conferences, and school events. Become a partner in your child s education.
