This report discusses the use of mobile phones for PHFLA pilot in Sudan, presented at the PHFLA review workshop in Kigali. It highlights the inland and marine fisheries resources in Sudan, including key findings, infrastructure, activities, stakeholders, post-harvest losses, interventions, and the way forward. The overview covers the dependence on inland water networks, lakes, dams, and reservoirs for inland fisheries, as well as the marine fisheries extending along the Red Sea state. The data collection process for inland locations is outlined, showcasing various activities, dates, and contact persons involved.

  3. OVERVIEW OF FISHERY & LOCATIONS Sudan Fisheries: Inland and Marine INLAND FISHERIES: Sudan's inland fisheries resources depends mainly on inland water network and lakes, dams and reservoirs. Over 90% of Sudanese catch obtained from inland fisheries on White Nile, Blue Nile and Nile river which on it constructed 5 man-made lakes on White Nile (Jebel Aulia), the blue Nile (Sennar & Roseires), Atbara river (Khashm ElGirba) & the main river Nile (LakeNubia), in addition to new Marawe Dam Estimated annual potential is 100,000~110,000 t/y MARINE FISHERIES: Sudanese marine fisheries extends from Egyptian boarders in the north to Eritrean boarders in the south, 750 km length, Red Sea State Fisheries covers 6 localities (Agig, Tokar, Suakin, Portsudan, Gabiat almaadin and Halaib), up on the dominant type of fishing gear captured fisheries divided in to Artisanal & Semi-industrial fisheries (Potential estimated 10000 tones)

  32. DATA COLLECTION: OTHER OBSERVATIONS The PHFLA Training took place in January and updating of survey manual and forms end at June - After that was long processing for funding The group meeting was very effective, but it took longer time than proposed Form 2 individual interview very long and boring for fishers and traders, so some abbreviations should be done in form 2 The forms in survey phone if the answer is No the relevant following questions should be inactive e.g. like if no physical loss the following asking about what phase and causes. (to avoid consuming time) Having reserve NDG software for loss assessors is a benefit Mobile phone did not always connect to network when trying to send data All landing sites and fish markets in Inland Fisheries have not any infrastructures 75% inland fishes sold in Khartoum (Markazi- Mawrada fish markets)

  35. LESSONS LEARNT & WAY FORWARD *Establishment of units under DOF concerning PHFL is needed, this will enables to cover more sites. * The PHFLA Regional workshops attendees should be taught to train fisheries inspectors and community mobilizers at National level * More results can be obtained from the collected data such as activities assessment
