Life at the turn of the 20thCentury. AFRICAN AMERICANS LED THE FIGHT AGAINST VOTING RESTRICTIONS AND JIM CROW LAWS. AS AMERICANS HAD MORE TIME FOR LEISURE ACTIVITIES , A MODERN MASS CULTURE EMERGED.

What were the significant trends in areas such as technology, education, race relations, and mass culture at the turn of the 20thcentury? Trace the historical underpinnings of legalized segregation and the African- American struggle against racism in the U.S. Analyze the spread of mass culture in the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century. Give examples of turn-of-the-20th-century innovations in marketing and advertising.
Voting Restrictions Poll Tax An annual tax that had to be paid before qualifying to vote. Grandfather Clause Even if a man failed the literacy test or couldn t afford the poll tax, he was still able to vote if he, his father, or his grandfather could vote before Jan. 1, 1867.
Fighting Legal Discrimination Segregation Laws to separate white and black people in public and private facilities. Jim Crow Laws Nickname for the segregation laws of the South. Plessy v. Ferguson Separation of races was legal in public accommodations (Separate but Equal)
