  1. Word. Cacophony, Dissonance, Euphony, Elision, Ellipsis Using your words deliberately in poetry

  2. Cacophony & Dissonance Harsh or discordant word sounds (This is the opposite of Euphony.) Dissonance is another word to describe cacophony a disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms. A harsh collection of sounds, the use of unpleasant-sounding words.

  3. Euphony Pleasant to hear. A harmonious combination of words. This can describe any poem that you think sounds pretty! It s the opposite of cacophony and dissonance.

  4. Elision The omission of unstressed syllables in words most often used to make a word fit in your line of poetry. Can also be used to show an accent. Contractions are elisions: can t, won t, I m, we re, isn t, etc. ereinstead of ever totherinstead of the other am rousinstead of amorous an instead of and

  5. Ellipsis The omission of words, but it doesn t change the meaning, just sounds more poetic. I will away instead of I will go away You curled the papers from your hair, Or clasped the yellow soles of * feet In the palms of both * soiled hands. *The word your is left out.
