Analysis of Sound Devices in Literature

  2. Alliteration - The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.

  5. Cacophony - A harsh, discordant mixture of sounds.

If God should only withdraw His hand from the floodgate, it would immediately fly open, and the fiery floods of the fierceness and wrath of God, would rush forth with inconceivable fury, and would come upon you with omnipotent power; and if your strength were ten thousand times greater than it is, yea, ten thousand times greater than the strength of the stoutest, sturdiest devil in hell, it would be nothing to withstand or endure it.   13. Assonance - The repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in non-rhyming stressed syllables near enough to each other for the echo to be discernible.

  15. Creates better flow for the writer Helps the reader understand the author s language through similar sounds Entices the reader to read on in the sermon

  16. Consonance - The recurrence of similar sounds, especially consonants, in close proximity.
