  2. FOCUS STANDARDS SS8H1: Evaluate the impact of European exploration and settlement on American Indians in Georgia. a. Describe the characteristics of American Indian living in Georgia at the time of European contact: to include culture, food, weapons/tools, and shelter c. Evaluate the impact of Spanish contact on American Indians, including the exploration of Hernando DeSoto and the establishment of Spanish missions along the barrier island

  3. LEARNING TARGETS I can explain why European nations wanted to explore and settle North America. I can explain how the arrival of the Spanish impacted Native Americans.

Instructional Activities Tuesday, August 30, 2022 Bell Ringer- brainstorm Note-taking- Title of Notes- European Exploration of North America Brain Wrinkles Activity- Students will write a ticket to Hernando de Soto (Offender) for his poor treatment of Native Americans. They should describe how the explorer treated Native Americans (took land, spread diseases, enslaved, killed, etc.). Then, they will write how they think de Soto should have treated the Indians. In the polaroid picture , they will draw a scene that shows the poor treatment of Native Americans. Ticket Out the Door

Instructional Activities Wednesday, August 31, 2022 Bell Ringer- Song and review questions Note-taking- Spanish in GA Activity- The students will complete a job application as if they were interested in being an explorer during the 1500s. They should think about what an explorer did, the motivation behind exploring, etc., when completing the application. poem- Write an 8 line poem about European exploration & settlement of North America In the picture box, the students will draw a picture of themselves as an explorer in action. Ticket Out of the Door

Instructional Activities Thursday, September 1, 2022 Bell Ringer-test format and review for test tomorrow Activity- The students will write a news article about the European countries impact on the Americas (exploration, contact with natives, settlement) as if they were alive during the time period. They will write a catchy headline in the top box. They will draw an illustration and a caption in the photograph section. Finish Review Sheet HW- study for Unit 1 test
