Starting School in 2021 We will be conducting Foundation student Literacy and Numeracy assessment sessions on the 28th, 29thof January and the 1stand 2ndof February. Your child will NOT begin school until Wednesday 3rdFebruary By the end of the school year you will receive a letter, which states who your child s teacher is and which classroom they will be in. This letter will also tell you the date and time of your child s assessment session. It is very important to attend this session. The regular start time of 9:00am will commence from Wednesday 3rdFebruary 2020 School will finish at 3:30pm each day
Helpful Hints for the First Day of School Read books about school from your local library Have some for school practices prior to the first day (e.g. un-doing and doing-up shoes, putting on and taking off jumpers and going to the toilet independently) Our Glendal Primary School Countdown to Foundation 2021 Calendar will help prepare your child for school. Please encourage your child to complete each daily activity (you can print this off from the school website) Help your child be prepared for the first day by supporting them in organising their clothes, packing their school bag, opening and closing their lunchboxes/containers
Rest and Sleep Establish a routine with a set bedtime to ensure your child gets enough sleep An ideal bedtime is between 7:00 and 7:30pm Sharing a bedtime story is a nice way of relaxing your child and preparing them for sleep If your child is unwell, please keep them home, to prevent any spreading of germs
Food for Energy Be sure that your child has a substantial and balanced breakfast Pack a healthy lunch and snacks, and explain when items should be eaten. Choose food that you know your child will eat We request that your child s lunchbox be a container, which they can easily open and close themselves. Also, please make sure that fruit and sandwiches are cut up so that your child can manage Provide a small and healthy Brain Food/Fruit Snack for your child to eat prior to recess (e.g. fruit, yoghurt or cut up vegetables) As a Joint Environmental Mission (JEM) school, Glendal has the goal of zero wrappers in lunch boxes. Students should bring their snacks and lunch in reusable containers; preferably with no wrappers
Dressing for School Allow your child to wear their school uniform at home so that they feel comfortable in it. Get them to practise buttoning and unbuttoning Ensure your child is wearing suitable clothes to suit the daily weather. They should bring rain coats and appropriate footwear in winter A wide-brimmed or legionnaires hat must be worn in Term 1 and 4 Children need to keep a change of clothes permanently in their bag in case of accidents (i.e. socks, underwear, top and pants)
Avoiding the Last-Minute Rush Leave home on time (pack your child s bag the night before to avoid a last minute rush) Your arrival time should be 5 to 10 minutes prior to the 9:00am bell. Teacher supervision in the yard before school does not begin until 8:45am It is important for your child to be at school on time because being late may make them feel anxious or unsettled for the day If you arrive after 9:10am, please go to the office and get a late slip to present to the class teacher It s not great to be late!
Settling and Goodbyes Your child will settle into school much quicker if you give a short and confident goodbye and send them to class with their teacher. This also encourages independence. If your child continues to be upset and does not settle, we will contact you
Going Home Each day after school, your child must be collected at 3:30pm by a nominated adult. Please inform your child of any changes to your normal collection arrangements If, for some reason, you cannot collect your child, please notify the School Office (9803 1330). Please let us know who you have organised to collect your child. We will release a student to a different adult when we receive a note, or a phone call, from the child s parent giving us permission to do so
Before and After School Care After School Care and Before School Care is run at our school by Camp Australia Before School Care operates from 7:00 to 8:45am and After School Care from 3:30 to 6:30pm If your child attends Before School Care they will be taken to their line up area at 8:45am Children attending After School Care will be collected from their classroom at 3:30pm and signed in *See the Camp Australia website more information
Looking After Belongings Label all of your child s belongings (clothing, hat, lunch box and drink bottle) if their belongings are labelled clearly, it makes it much easier to return lost property to the correct person. Show your child where their name labels are so they know where to look Attach a small toy or key ring to your child s bag to make it easy for them to identify There is a lost property area located near the School Office, outside the Health Centre Bring a labelled art smock and library bag to school. Please give these to your child s class teacher on their assessment day at the start of Term 1. Art smocks will be kept at school all year for class and Art use.
Home/School Communication Compass, our Parent Portal system, is our main means of communication with parents. You will receive a letter with your Compass login details next year The Compass Parent Portal provides information about your child s attendance and school events. Next year, you will need to give approval for your child s absences from school through Compass Using Compass, you can also give online consent and payment for excursions and in-school visits (please note that this can also be done via the School Office) Glendal parents also access the weekly school newsletter (Wednesdays), a school calendar and their child s Semester 1 and 2 reports through Compass
Home/School Communication There will be a Foundation Year Level Blog sharing information and providing reminders of important upcoming events. The blog will also show photos of your child s learning. You will receive the login details for this blog next year Unpack your child s school bag with them each night. Look in your child s Communication Folder because it will contain important documents. Please regularly remove all notices, receipts and work samples, etc. from your child s folder You are welcome to schedule an appointment with your child s class teacher. All appointments with teachers must be made via the School Office.
Thank you! We look forward to seeing you in 2021!
