  1. Welcome! Brandywine School District School Choice Information Session Monday, October 26, 2020 Lincoln Hohler, Superintendent Jason Hale, Chief Financial Officer Stacy Karpinski, Choice Coordinator Embrace, Inspire, and Challenge Every Student Every Day

Delawares School Choice Law The Delaware School Choice Program is intended to "increase access to educational opportunity for all children throughout the state regardless of where they may live," and to "maximize parental choice in obtaining access to educational opportunities for their children." According to the law, a parent residing in Delaware may enroll his or her child in a public school in any school district in accordance with the law and if space is available.   3. Choice Open Enrollment Open Enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year begins November 2, 2020 and runs through January 13, 2021. For incoming Kindergarten students, the Open Enrollment period will open on November 2, 2020, and will close on the first day of school in September, 2021. Applications will only be accepted Online at www.schoolchoicede.org Computers will be available at the District Office for those needing assistance. Choice Priorities Siblings of students enrolled in the requested Choice School for the CURRENT School Year (2020-2021) and who will continue to attend the same school for the NEXT School Year (2021-2022). 1. K-8 students who reside in the District and submit a Choice application for daycare reasons. 2. Students who reside in the District and are currently attending a District school, and do not fall into the first or second category. (This category does not apply to incoming Kindergartners). 3. Students who reside in the District but do not currently attend a District school, and do not fall into the first or second category. 4. Students who reside outside of the District. 5.   5. What information must be provided and how does a student qualify for acceptance? Students who are not currently enrolled in a Delaware Public School must pre-register at their feeder school before they will be considered for Choice. For students entering grades 2-12 and who are not currently enrolled in a Brandywine School District school, the following documentation must be provided by Wednesday, January 20, 2021: 1) Previous School Year (2019-2020) FINAL: Report Card Previous School Year (2019-2020) FINAL: Attendance Record 2) 3) Previous School Year (2019-2020) FINAL: Discipline Record If attendance is not listed on a report card, your student s school may print out an attendance record from their school computer system (such as eSchool ), or write a letter on school letterhead in regards to any absences and/or tardies. Your student s school may either print a discipline report from their school computer system (such as eSchool ), or write a letter on school letterhead in regards to any suspensions and/or detentions, or a lack thereof. This information should be attached to the online application. In order for a student to qualify for acceptance into the School Choice Program in the Brandywine School District: Each student s academics, attendance, and behavior must be in good standing.   6. How are applications sorted? All eligible applications are grouped by: Student s grade level Student s priority First-choice school Lottery Number (Randomly assigned electronically) 1. 2. 3. 4.   9. If you receive an invitation: Invitation and Waitlist letters will be emailed to all applicants by February 28th, 2021. Parents must notify the district of their decision to accept or decline an invitation by Friday, March 19, 2021. What happens if you receive an invitation to a school that is not your first choice? Parents will have the option to decline that invitation and will automatically be placed onto the wait-list for all schools listed ABOVE the school you were invited to.   10. If you are placed on a wait list: The wait-lists will be maintained by the Brandywine School District Choice Office. To inquire about the placement of your child on a wait-list you may call or e-mail the Choice Office. Each wait-list will be closed on the first day of school in September. No applicant on a wait-list will be invited to a Choice School after the first day of school in September, 2021. Embrace, Inspire, and Challenge Every Student Every Day

  11. Can parents withdraw a Choice application? Yes, by logging into your www.SchoolChoiceDE.org account and withdrawing the application electronically -OR- via written notification to the Choice Office Embrace, Inspire, and Challenge Every Student Every Day

  12. What happens if my child does not get an invitation to any Choice school? Unfortunately, Choice is not a guarantee. If a student does not receive an invitation, he or she will be automatically enrolled in their resident feeder school. Because of the limited space within the Brandywine School District, it is recommended that families have alternate plans to attending their requested Choice school. We encourage you to make use of the Open Enrollment Period and apply to as many districts and/or charter schools as you wish. Embrace, Inspire, and Challenge Every Student Every Day

SCHOOL CHOICE & THE SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM SCHOOL CHOICE & THE SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM When to submit a Choice Application: When to submit a Choice Application: If you live outside the feeder pattern of Claymont Elementary School, Lancashire Elementary School, and/or Maple Lane Elementary School and wish to attend, you must complete a Choice application for each program outside of your feeder school: As a feeder program, students within the feeder pattern of those schools will have the opportunity to enroll in the program. Remaining seats will be filled from a separate Waitlist. Application Method: Online at www.schoolchoicede.org Students applying to Claymont Elementary School, Lancashire Elementary School, and Maple Lane Elementary School will have the option to select either Spanish Immersion or Regular Education. Step 1: Submit your Choice Application during the Open Enrollment Period Step 2: Receive letter via email regarding the outcome of your Choice Application Step 3: If invited: Respond to invitation letter NOTE: School Choice Applications for Spanish Immersion Program Invitees are to be submitted, in accordance with the above instructions, for any student residing outside of the feeder pattern of the requested school.
