Common Themes from Interviewees Challenges in working with SHRP2 NDS Difficult to work with data you did not collect Small sample size, especially for crashes and near-crash events Cost of access in time and money Vehicle mix and lack of heavy vehicles limits use for setting many design standards where heavy vehicles are controls Dataset is aging, may be obsolete soon Age of associated crash data Fleet turnover, new vehicle safety systems

  8. Common Themes from Interviewees Strengths in working with SHRP2 NDS Geographic diversity High quality of RID data Larger sample size for kinematic data Real non-event driving Potential for future before/after studies combining SHRP2 (before) with new data collection (after)

  9. Take Away Note from Interviews: Despite the challenges, most interviewees saw value in the SHRP2 dataset, especially in the normal, uneventful driving periods.

  10. Identify Research Needs The project team identified the top 22 suggestions for future research based on the literature review and interviews. The project team, in consultation with the project panel, prioritized 7 key research needs and developed Research Needs Statements for each These Research Needs Statements can be used by AAHSTO committees and other interested parties to guide future research direction using the SHRP2 NDS

Enhancing Usability of Data In addition to research needs, the project team identified several actions that would improve usability of the SHRP2 NDS Data: Catalog of available data in normal driving dataset; what is coded, what is not Catalog of available reduced datasets Catalog of available coding of pedestrian and bicycle presence or activity in forward view Publicize availability of data
