By organizing educational events and fostering strategic partnerships, the group aims to enhance professional development and contribute to improved rehabilitation outcomes in osteopathy. Through its efforts, the SIG addresses significant health challenges such as chronic diseases, mental health, and mortality predictors related to physical activity and muscle health.

Sport Exercise and Rehabilitation Special Interest Group Advanced Practice Career Pathway
Function of the Special Interest Group Facilitating effective networking and communication among osteopathic practitioners. Promoting the exchange of knowledge, research, and best practice within the osteopathic community. Supporting Inclusivity cultural diversity, and equitable health outcomes in the fields of sport, exercise and rehabilitation. Supporting ongoing professional development through the organizing of educational events, workshops, conferences, and webinars. Fostering strategic relationships and partnerships with other professional organizations, healthcare providers, educators, funders, researchers and other stakeholders also involved in sport, exercise, and rehabilitation
Why do we need this SIG? Rehabilitation The Expert Reference Group for Osteopathy (ERG) September 2023 1 Recommended that ACC develop rehabilitation outcome measures 2 ACC currently using the review to improve rehabilitation outcomes.
Exercise and Sport Type 2 Diabetes accounts for approximately 10% of the total health budget, or $2.1B NZD per annum. Predictions estimate by 2040, diabetes will cost New Zealand $3.5 billion 16% of the current health budget, (Holder-Pearson et al 2022) Cardiovascular Disease estimated annual cost to the health system of $3.3 billion, (Wilson et al 2023) Cancer is the leading cause of health loss in Aotearoa New Zealand with about 25,000 people diagnosed every year prevention efforts can be strengthened . insufficient physical activity .. Up to 50% preventable, (Cancer Control Agency 2022)
Chronic inflammation is a prime contributor to chronic diseases, depression poor mental and the leading cause of death in the world (Centre for Disease Control 2017, Danzer et al 2008) VO2 Max is a major predictor of all cause mortality Skeletal muscle index is a major predictor of all cause mortality. Increases detoxification pathways Increases testosterone production which reduces all cause mortality in males Balancing hormone levels in females. Mitochondrial Genesis.
Rehabilitation Purpose of Rehabilitation is to return an individual back to full function minimising re injury Osteopathy Osteopathic Rehabilitation Activities of Daily Living Exercise Sports
Educational Pathways Special Interest Groups to develop guidelines, educational pathways. Conversation to start with Tertiary level courses developed at Education providers such as Ara Online Education From Australia MEMBERS ONLY Education Courses from New Zealand able to be uploaded onto Australia website Members only Existing University and Polytechnic sport exercise and rehabilitation courses used New face to face courses to be developed in line with New Zealand needs
