  2. Who are we? English Language Education (ELE), Paterson s Land, Holyrood Road campus What do we do? Provide in-sessional and pre-sessional support to international students in key areas relevant to their studies at university level

  4. ELSIS Workshops In Semester 1 (25-29 September), we offer a series of workshops (2 hours each) on the following: Academic Grammar Academic Writing Listening & Note-taking Reading Speaking Book on MyEd

  5. Which ELSIS courses are available? Academic writing courses Other academic English courses For taught Master s students & Undergraduates: Academic Writing for International Students For all international students: Grammar for Academic Writing For PhD students: Writing a PhD First-Year Report Listening to Lectures & Note-taking Presentation Skills Writing up Qualitative PhD Research Social Speaking Skills Writing up Quantitative PhD Research Better Pronunciation Writing your PhD: Reviewing the Literature Seminar Discussion Skills

What other information is useful to know about ELSIS courses? all courses are free all face-to-face classroom sessions courses range from 4 12 weeks Independent study materials available to download free from ELE website: http://www.ed.ac.uk/english-language-teaching/students/current- students/elsis/elsis-courses

  7. How can I register on ELSIS courses? Go to the web page of the course you would like to enrol on, for example: Seminar Discussion Skills http://www.ed.ac.uk/english-language-teaching/students/current- students/elsis/elsis-courses/seminar-discussion-skills Click on the link under Registration to take you to the registration form and instructions for completion and submission.

  8. Supporting your students If School staff feel a student needs help with English, the Programme Director / Personal Tutor / Supervisor can refer the student to us at Mike.Garbutt@ed.ac.uk Please provide us with the following information: - Student name, number, nationality and programme, and which ELSIS course(s) you wish to refer the student to and why. The student will then be offered ELSIS tuition, or independent study materials and advice.

  9. Do I have to take the TEAM test? YES if: your most recent overall IELTS score is 6.5 your most recent iBT-TOEFL score is 92 you have an equivalent score in another test you are a Visiting or Exchange student with no current English test certificate

  10. Do I have to take the TEAM test? NO if: your most recent overall IELTS score is 7.0 your most recent iBT-TOEFL score is 100 you have an equivalent score in another test you attended the University of Edinburgh s pre-sessional course and took the end-of-course assessments you are an Online Distance Learning student

  11. What do I need to know about the TEAM test? Components of the test: Listening + Grammar & Vocabulary takes about 50 minutes various venues Monday 11th Friday 15th September (no need to register in advance) details of TEAM on ELE website: www.ed.ac.uk/english-language-teaching/students/current-students/elsis/team-test

  12. Graduate Writing Centre (International Students) In addition to our other courses, we offer one-to-one academic writing tutorials for postgraduate (PGT and PGR) international students. These supportive sessions are 25 minutes long and are designed to give you the opportunity to discuss specific areas of academic writing with a member of ELE staff. Tutorials are held around campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in November & December
