Discovering the Fascinating Roe Deer: All About Their Appearance and Behavior

Roe deer, native to Britain, have distinctive features such as large ears with black rims, two white spots on their nose, and small antlers with three points on each side. While male roe deer, called bucks, grow antlers that fall off yearly, females, known as does, do not possess antlers. Observing their unique characteristics adds to the appreciation of these graceful creatures.

2. There are six species of wild deer in the British Isles. Chinese Water Deer Muntjac Fallow Deer Roe Deer Red Deer Sika Deer

4. All About Roe Deer Roe deer are native to Britain, having been here since before the Mesolithic period (6,000 to 10,000 years ago).

5. What do I look like? A Roe deer has large ears with black rims. It has two white spots at the end of its nose.

6. What do I look like? A Roe deer has a white bottom and a short tail.

7. What do I look like? A male (boy) Roe deer is called a buck. What do you see on top of the buck s head?

8. What do I look like? Antlers Roe buck have small antlers that usually have three points on each side when fully grown.

9. What do I look like? The buck s antlers fall off each October to December. The new set start to grow very soon and are called in velvet .

10. What do I look like? The antlers are usually fully grown by April. Old antlers may be eaten.

11. What do I look like? A female (girl) Roe deer is called a doe. Does a doe have antlers?

14. What do I look like? A baby roe deer is called a kid. Young are normally born in May and June.

16. Lifestyle facts. Roe deer hoof prints (or slots) are small and are 4cm long. These are usually found along woodland paths.

17. Lifestyle facts. Feeding Roe deer have small stomachs so they have to choose the very best plants to eat.

18. Lifestyle facts. Roe deer like herbs, some crops, hedgerow plants, new buds and leaves. They also like eating many garden plants. Yummy!
